here is an example of my opinion. Take a "block" for instance. The blocks katate teaches only work when used in harmony with a "punch" that the same system teaches (ie a reverse punch). BUT those same blocks that karate use are worthless against a boxer's jab or a cross or a hook. you be hit three or 4 times before you could even respond with a block.

karateka do not practice what they preach. Observe 90% of kumite... looks just like "kickboxing" why??? Because the relatively complex and slow movements in karate are ineffective against full speed resisting opponent.

science has proven that a fighter, a soldier, whoever under stress will default to their level of training. I have studied okinawan and japanese arts i am not talking out my ass. I have shodan in a koryu jujutsu system, and i have studied uiechi ryu karate-do. I am a full instructor of kali silat, and krav maga. I am not bashing karate as much as critically observing it. Look at modernized systems like Kajukenbo and american Kenpo, and kyokushin... that is good stuff.

I understand your point of view and I agree that karate is not THE most effective combat system with the focus on other stuff than fighting and their traditional way of thinking. But not being the best doesn't mean it's completely useless. I know martial arts is about combat but seeing how little the odds are of a normal nice person ending up in a fight, it would truly be a waste of time to be practising a martial art without the additional benefit of fun, fitness or mental training.

I do not know about the details of the styles you have studied but from what I've learned the way bunkai and kihon are demonstrated in shows such as this video is not the way karate is intended to be used in a real life confrontation. For example, using a full zenkutsudachi with a regular yoko uke is not meant for real life, it's just the method of training your body. IRL the actual execution of karate techniques would probably resemble those of something like Krav Maga.

And to repeat myself, you're right. Karate kumite looks like kickboxing. As I said, it's because kumite has rules so you can't use most bunkai techniques. And since kumite is about scoring points, there would be no gain in using real combat techniques when quick sissy techniques will score you a point. Kumite is just a way of training reflexes and spirit. Not combat simulation.
Of course, krav Maga and the likes is still more effective, but I think you exaggerate the ineffectiveness of karate.

most of what you are saying I agree with, BUT what is ther purpose of having multiple methods...(mostly that is just a cop out excuse with no substantial logical answer).
In a stress environment you will default to your training, if you say well "in bunkai" its different than kumite, " well...uhh..well.. you see... if it was for REAL ...uhhh we would do it differently. For the most part, NO YOU WONT. that is a scientific statistic.

If you study for sport, or recreation or just plain fun then that is surely a valid reason, especially when you (potentially) will never have a need to defend yourself. But graveyards are full of "nice, people that never looked for a fight", but the fight found them in robbery,assault,rape,burglary.Especially in places in the world far more dangerous than perhaps where you live.
My opinion is that the combative arts are as old as time, if it didnt work it died on the battlefield.

Originally the modern type of kumite wasn't a part of karate. It was made in order to let people compete. So karate isn't supposed to have that many methods really.
I'm not one to argue with science so if it has been proved that people default to their training, well then I guess I'm pretty f***ed but at least I'll have fun until the day a bad guy buries me eh

One of my opinions is based on the fact that many people indeed study "martial arts" for self-defense (especially here in the states). So they unknowingly run down to the nearest "Rex-Kwon Do bar&grill" and begin their mis-information programming. Their sensei (i hate that word) has them believing that their slow as hell block and reverse punch will stop a meth-head murderer on parole ( as long as their gi has a snap to it)
