I am getting so nostalgic watching these videos of the old NCAA Tourney games. They were so great and I was in junior high during these days but remember them vividly. I like the announcers, graphics and production back then much better than now!

Austin Peay had the lead at halftime and Dickie V said he would stand on his head if the Govs held on and won the game. He backed it up in studio and even better actually came to Austin Peay and did it at the Govs BBall banquet in front of the team & fans. Awesome times, we all piled out of the frat house into any vehicles handy and drove around Clarksville blowing horns and going crazy. The Govs had a great run through the OVC tourney that year also!

Hey, sctrojan12...any chance you can post the second round game between APSU and Providence. It was a OT thriller that, IIRC, Peay should have won (I think some late missed FTs by APSU may have kept PC in it). An enduring memory of that game was a player from APSU helping his teammate, who was inconsolably crying, off the court.

You are correct, the Peay should have won that game. My lasting memory is of Billy "The Kid" Donovan of Rick Pitino's Providence team knocking away a Peay player to hit the go ahead 3 pointer, a foul for sure in my mind.

AP had a great run in the OVC, first at the Dunn center, one of the greatest 2nd half comebacks ever to advance. We beat EKU in the final, 71-68 on that shot by Richie. It was awesome to rush the court after that win, especially with the MTSU fans cheering on Eastern KY. Darryl "Bedrock" Bedford was the Tourney MVP. Our upset of Illinois was huge and as mentioned still one of the top 10 upsets in NCAA history. We then lost 90-87 in OT to Providence.

These were the glory years for OVC basketball, AP's magical run in 1987 of course was the best. APSU made the finals of the OVC tourney the next two seasons also but lost to Murray and then MTSU. AP's upset was the 1st of 3 in a row for the OVC. Murray (14 seed) upset 3 seed NC State 78-75 in 1988, then losing to 6 seed Kansas 61-58 (Kansas won it all). In 1989 MTSU (13 seed) beat 4 seed Florida State 97-83 and the lost to 5 seed Virginia 104-88. The OVC is o-fer in the NCAA' since then.
1987 MURFREESBORO, ...( 3 months ago by iamabartig)
Nothing like this will ever happen again at Austin Peay until Dave Loos retires as the coach. His boring, slow, predictable style of play works well when the competition is similar - like in the OVC - but when matched against bigger, stronger, faster opponents, it just plays into the opponents' hands. Just look at the 8 straight years of Bubba Wells and Trenton Hassell that were wasted under the Loos' tenure. How do you have 8 straight years of NBA talent and not create an OVC dynasty?!
