Also a major point of it was to demonstrate how important the life time of a civilisation is to the final answer. i.e if civs typically live along time they are more likely to co-exist for a some period whereas shortlived civilisations will have little chance of contacting each other.

How about multiplying that times f sub (GaD), "Give a Darn" meaning that the alien race has the motivation to send out radio waves and be detected? It is possible a lot of alien races, if they exist, would prefer to discover and probe before communicating. From survivability, trying to contact unknown entities is a large gamble.

The Drake Equation isn't exactly accurate--you are right. But I don't think that the predictions were too wishful. I'd say they are relatively accurate. But am I willing to bet on the number of civilizations based on this equation? Certainly not.

Could you imagine, if when humans began exploration of this planet, and found new civilizations (aboriginals, different races, etc); If they had have realized something like "Hey, let's shelter, feed, and educate these people, because this is another group of humans that could add to our intelligence, and better our way of living."
