StrangePlans for First Rotating Skyscraper UnveiledPlans for First Rotating Skyscraper UnveiledThe Associated PressAn Italian architect said he is poised to start construction on a new skyscraper in Dubai that will be "the world's first building in motion,'' an 80-story tower with revolving floors that give it an ever-shifting shape. (June 25)It may look like something out of a science fiction movie....But Italian architect David Fisher showed up in New York Tuesday, saying that he was poised to build the world's first moving building in Dubai. SOT: David Fisher, Architect and Creator of Dynamic Tower: "First of all, it's the first building that is being, that is dynamic, changing the shape. You can adjust the shape the way you like every given moment. The model being pitched is an 80-story skyscraper with revolving floors ... That would provide residents with a constantly changing view of the Persian Gulf.A few apartments that would take up entire floors would be able to spin on command ---while the rest of
the building rotated in patterns that could be altered over time.SOT Fisher: It's designed by life, shaped by time. But movement isn't the only unique feature about this building --- Designers say they plan to build it all in a factory in Italy.... When its complete, they'll ship the structure to Dubai...where they hope it will be ready for offices and residents by 2010.And for those of you worried about getting dizzy?....Fisher says not to worry....he says the rotations will be slow enough that they won't be noticed. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

i love the ideea but i'm concerned anyway for the safety of the people who will live around/in the cause modular buildings like that....well you have to balance 80 stories of rotating appartments that even with hidraulic brakes are at the mercy of the winds (that in dubai...in the winter season are hurricane classs winds) on a central column that has to support pretty much everything (plumbing/elevators/etc)and that is also exposed to nature thanks to the gaps between the condos!!

i think it doesn't really rotate that fast that's why you wont get dizzy or out-balanced. it's simply an illustration on how the buidling moves about. it's really a great idea though! dynamically innovative!

It looks amazing. ... ( 4 months ago by a04s11)
It looks amazing. The thing is though, architecture has turned into a competition, and people have forgotten its essence. Currently, it's about who's got the tallest, the biggest or the most sculptural building. In a time where climatic issues are at their peak and people are dying of hunger, should we really be spending who knows how many millions into a building that turns? Check out Richard Rogers, Patkau, Renzo Piano... That's architecture, ADDRESSING CURRENT NEEDS AND LOOKING BEYOND THEM.

The amazing thing ... ( 4 months ago by WILLYWANKER9)
The amazing thing is that these buildings will be dynamic and that this new era of architecture will incorporate mechanics and turbines to act as a mini power-plant. Thus, there will be no need for large sole power plants. Selected structures will act as their own 'power-plant' for the structure itself as well its surroundings. One potential problem though would be the cost of maintaining the mechanical side of things. In short. These buildings will be beautiful, selfseficient
I would like to ... ( 4 months ago by JavaGuy147)
I would like to agree with some of the comments about how contemporary architecture has lost its "essence." The building that has the most mechanics or sculptural look is not necessarily the best. Architecture is about spaces that encourage moods and actions and about depicting a message. Many architects get too carried away and forget about the culture of the site, Genius loci, traditional techniques and eurythmy, and function (besides aethetic function).
Frank Lloyd Wright ... ( 3 months ago by georgewu5)
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the tallest single tower in the world because there was no 9/11 before, but since the tragedy of the World Trade Center, where 2,700 people were either burned to death or jumped out of windows ibn 2001, people changed the core material into concrete and business as usual! But they never asked the question what the temperature in the core like in a fire like 9/11? can people still use the firestairs? NO! Sky-bridges connecting multi-towers is the answer!-dancewu(dot)net

Esthetically ... ( 2 months ago by tulmax82)
Esthetically speaking it's wonderful! But: even though they say there would be a small power plant in the basement to provide for most of its energy need, still this building will consume much more energy then a normal skyscraper and is it worth of it? I mean, in a time when energy is becoming the real issue, can we afford to keep on inventing such useless (yet good looking) structures?
besides, the real ... ( 2 months ago by tulmax82)
besides, the real future of architecture is in bio-structures (literally a building that is alive because is covered with bio-materials), those are really shape-changing, adaptive, eco-friendly, energy efficient, and extremely resistant to earthquakes.

There are wind ... ( 2 months ago by Karateckie)
There are wind turbines in between floors to generate enough energy to power the building plus store additional power in the power plant...at least there is another video that describes the plan for this part. Why would the Associated Press leave this part out, I think generating the building's own power is one of the best parts...architects could use to design more buildings like this! Imagine if every structure were built to generate it's own energy...

THis is certainly a huge step into the futuristic vison of architecture! Although i like the architecture in dubai prospering as never before and the whole world observing it with astonishment, i wouldn't consider it being a terrific staking/investment other than it is financial wise!
I'd say dubai's ... ( 1 month ago by sako88)
I'd say dubai's commitment is great but my prediction is that the architecture will end up being invaluable in the end due to all the amazing buildings and skyscrapers filling the streets of dubai. Soon i think dubai will look as an alienated world all by it's own and a world with higher amount of respect to constructions than human value and effort. It's time to consider what all this might be causing for them, in the end money comes and goes.

what about weathering? A normal tower has to withstand against rain and weathering for decades if not at least a century of weathering. Now, if this tower was to have movable components wouldn't that just speed up the process and reduce integrity?
