Uploaded by: RyanGolddRedux
Video Description:
"When my body dies, let my soul be granted the glory of Paradise. Amen."
Born in October 1968, Sebastian Hennig was a member of the Knabenchor Hannover from 1976 to 1994. He is the son of its founder-director, Heinz Hennig. Boy soprano Sebastian Hennig is nearly ideal at 14 1/2 years in this original version of Pergolesi's work, paired with an (adult) male alto and accompanied by five string players plus organ. The original LP recording has been release as a CD and is available at a number of online CD retailers. See the link for further details.

René Jacobs (Born: October 30, 1946, Ghent) is a Belgian singer. He came to fame as a countertenor but in recent years has become renowned as a conductor of Baroque and early Classical opera. Jacobs began his musical career as a boy chorister at the Cathedral of Ghent.

Stabat Mater is a thirteenth century Roman Catholic sequence variously attributed to Innocent III and Jacopone da Todi. Its title is an abbreviation of the first line, Stabat mater dolorosa ("The sorrowful mother was standing"). The hymn, one of the most powerful and immediate of extant medieval poems, meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. It has been set to music by many composers, among them Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Joseph Haydn, Antonín Dvořák, Antonio Vivaldi, Emanuele d'Astorga, Gioacchino Rossini, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Charles Villiers Stanford, Charles Gounod, Krzysztof Penderecki, Francis Poulenc, Karol Szymanowski, Alessandro Scarlatti (1724), Domenico Scarlatti (1715), Pedro de Escobar, Arvo Pärt, Josef Rheinberger, Giuseppe Verdi, Zoltán Kodály, Trond Kverno (1991), Hristo Tsanoff, the black metal band Anorexia Nervosa, and most recently Karl Jenkins.

I'm afraid I don't have any special secrets. I took a mp3 rip of the CD at 194 kbps and used Windows Movie Maker to attach it to some pictures.

Good thing Herr Hennig allowed the extra training in this case. However, I wouldn't mind hearing a good countertenor singing the alto part (Jacobs is excellent, as would be Daniels or Jaroussky). A good adult female soprano would be Sarah Brightman (whose vibrato is always tightly controlled & in perfect taste, & whose clarion voice could etch crystal). Duelling warbles from hyper-endowed Estrogen in music of this period, however, are not welcome (for my part).

I know this may sound strange, but my all time favourite recording of this amazing work was done some years ago by the King's College Choir (en masse), & appeared on the Amadeus film soundtrack. Ironically, it wasn't until I heard that version that I felt I had really 'gotten' what the composer had intended to say there (emotionally-speaking, that is). Even more ironic in that the work wasn't scored for full choir, but rather, for only the two soloists. Purists will hate me, but there it is.

Jacobs, of course is the countertenor. Be polite to the ladies. Some watch my vids.

It's your page, so of course ... However, my criticism is just (I believe), not only in that I highly praised one of the 'fairer sex', but also in that excessive vibrato is definitely inappropriate in 18th-Century music (a lesson lost on most modern soloists, alas). I had praised Miss Brightman because (among the very few) she seems to have 'gotten' the idea. (Also because of her exceptional vocal quality and talent.) Would that all were of her stature. And of course, Jacobs is a soloist here.

I have known and lovedthis recording for many years, having first heard it played over the speakers of a Brighton record shop, for a prospective customer. She(foolishly !) chose a different version, but having heard the lovely tones of Sebastian Hennig, the cd never made it back on to the shelves. I still know of no better version of this work.

Sebastian Hennig was son of the former director and founder of Hannover boyschoir (Knabenchor Hannover) Heinz Hennig. He sings as soloist in many Bach-Cantatas under Leonhardt (Teldec): 113, 114, 132, 133, 151, etc. Also in Schützs Kleine Geistliche Konzerte and more. He is currently bariton and sings in Hannover Harmonists; he sang also as bariton in the Hammerschmidt-CD.

hennig did have A Great boy soprano's voice and was skilled,so when i'm listening this piece,i can't help wondering, how would andreas scholl make it?-you know, as a boy soprano he was not so famous as well, i have never had a chance to listen to his choir record yet, maybe he just never ever made any official record as a boy? i guess...

rSebastion has a lovely boy soprano voice, but really can't pull this off quite as well as an adult, especially a countertenor such as Scholl, Chance or Daniels. His breath support iw not ready yet to sustain long phrases in a solo genre. Just my humble opinion (voice teacher of many years).

Why the heck would one attempt to compare an adult countertenor and a boy treble?

Besides, the work was written for male soprano and male alto, not two male alto's. Having a countertenor sing the soprano part would be totally missing the point.
I'm not quite sure ... ( 3 months ago by dailung67)
I'm not quite sure what everyone is talking about here. Sebastian Hennig is a boy soprano in this recording, not an alto. He was at the peak of his voice at this period, voice teacher of many years, notwithstanding. And why would anyone want to compare a boy to an adult? A bit strange... Andreas Scholl did not record anything as a boy soproano, as far as I am aware. So, whether he would have done better than Sebastian is academic, isn't it?
