The new Espace's safety system is made to "know" when to deploy the Airbags, if the crash doenst warrant their deployment it wont..
It in this case decided to fire the seatbelt tensioners allowing the load limiters on the belts to work.
Airbags can cause injury's when they deploy they arn't the saving grace in most accidents look at the old espace its airbag went off but did sweet FA to save the driver...

I think this doesn't go for all old cars. I look for frame ratings on IIHS crash tests as well to show what happens when hitting same weight vehicle. Frame tests weren't done on many old cars, just injury risk. Now frame tests are very vigorous. My friend broadsided a Suburban doing 50 in a '95 Lexus ES300 (pimped V6 Camry) and not only were they uninjured, there was no big frame failure of the ES300/Camry. We also saw a new pickup hitting an old camry head on. Only the truck driver was injured
