AsianAmerican68 is full of crap. It WAS a sneak attack, the IJN planned the attack beginning in Jan 1941, Tokyo lied about maintaining diplomatic negotiations right up thru Friday, Dec. 5th. FDR sat up all night in the White House Dec 6-7 as we decoded Tokyo's diplomatic messages. Yes, we knew an attack was imminent, but not where. The carrier force which attacked us was radio quiet for 2 weeks as it assembled and steamed across the ocean to surprise us, the very definition of sneak attack.

it was a sneak attack , but the planes were seen on radar . it was thought to be the b17s that were flying from California. so really if the states had sent out a few planes to see what was going on they could have alerted pearl harbor and could have stopped the attack or reduce damage

U kno it. Japan changed nameplaces in naval code in mid-Nov, then its entire naval code just 2 weeks before the attack, leaving US almost blind. But up until then, all their assets were moving SW towards Philippines, SEA and Dutch East Indies. The only downside of breaking/reading enemy code is we thought we KNEW everything. Howev, intel was suspicious of NOT hearing from Japan's carriers w/everything else on the move. They did not change their diplomatic code, which we were still reading.

There's no smoking gun in the McCollum Memo, ie nothing implicating FDR, who took similar advice from civilian and military advisors alike. As the 2 sat up all night Dec 6 in the White House, advisor Harry Hopkins even suggested we attack Japan first, but FDR rejected it. W/no situation room or command bunker like today and US Pacific military commands alerted a full 10 days in advance, it was up to MacArthur in Manila and Kimmel/Short in Pearl to defend their commands, which they failed to do.

It is now historical fact (and has been quietly accepted) that Churchill knew that a Japanese task force was en route to Pearl Harbor- because British cryptanalysts broke JN-25 a year and a half prior to Pearl Harbor. No proof exists that Churchill told Roosevelt, but it is very unlikely that Churchill witheld the information from the President- who was intent on getting the U.S. into the war against Germany. One author has suggested that the President was told in Aug. 1941 at Placentia Bay.
