vengence. .Like many others who comment here you believe that if only the US had not got involved then somehow the Communists would have been compassionate people? Millions died under Nazism, Millions died in Russia and China , Ideological systems kill people thats what they do, It is was a tragedy that the UN were gutless and so many Americans had to die there. They could have won like in Korea but they left.
Vengence.. When you ... ( 3 weeks ago by scones55555)
Vengence.. When you say "it is surprising Vietnam forgave the US" you are so wrong , Many people in Vietnam do not forgive the US and the reason is because Nixon betrayed them and abandoned the South to live under a fucking lousy corrupt and inhumane Communist system .

judopilotmathew . I'm sure glad you are here. I was left wing and a draft resister in the sixties and despised the US until I went to Vietnam and Cambodia in 1990, after that my attitude started to change,(I still oppose the draft and compulsory tours to Iraq) America / Britain/Australia are far from perfect but I am sick of mindless anti Americanism/West.. . The big evils of the 20th century were Nazism and Communism and now it is mostly Islamic Fundamentalism .

I have to redefine what I meant on that last comment because these so called Islamic Fundamentalists mostly kill muslims.

I wonder what would have happened if we just recognized their independence after world war two. They may have become allied with China or the Soviet Union anyway.

Look, the US military machine killed upwards of two million Vietnamese (no one knows exactly), yet our involovement was justified?
This insane episode can be summarized by a young US Lieutenent who was directing the burning of a village by his unit: "We had to destroy it in order to save it." The idea that the US is the upholder of all that is good and right is quickly dispelled by making yourself aware of American genocidal expansionist policy from the system's inception.

After the TET offensive the US and the South Vietnamese had pretty much wiped out the Viet Cong in South Vietnam , General Giap the commander of the North said he could not believe his luck when because of anti war sentiment in the US , the US started to withdraw . he said " we lost the battle but won the war" un quote , see the documentary where he actually says that.!!!

uatwmf you say 2 million were killed by the US war machine? what about the communist war machine? After the US left over 2 million were killed in Indochina, not in a war , just civilians killed in the communist experiment, get real, please learn and talk sense.

That last thing about how we supposedly ignore our own history of genocide and that made it hard for us to get inside of the heads of the Vietcong is a bunch of BS. It's just politically correct white guilt garbage.

Whilst this video does shed light on a lot of facts that went down under, the assessment of the american administration at the time is unfair.
America emerged ... ( 5 days ago by simsherman)
America emerged from WWII as superpower, and was intent on maintaining the status quo/expanding their global influence. There was a very obvious threat to american dominance at the time, which was the USSR and communism. (from the american perspective, these two were the same) Naturally, the vietnam war was deemed by the administration at the time to be a measure to preserve american influence.
Mindsets are hard ... ( 5 days ago by simsherman)
Mindsets are hard to change. We have hindsight now so it is easy to say "america should have empathized with the vietnamese people"...
The vietnam war did change american foreign policy significantly though. People need to make mistakes before they learn.
Sim.. you talk ... ( 4 days ago by scones55555)
Sim.. you talk about "American influence" and "American dominance" you talk nonsense , it was about freedom and it involved a great many countries that did not want Totalitarian domination by Communist or Fascist ideology, sure the US made mistakes but do not equate them as being equal opposites, The US and the "free world" did not butcher people by the million , sure mistakes were made but there is no comparison in terms of wholesale slaughter.
