I love Ochs' performance here.
And I always grin when Curtis Mayfield says "He broke a house record, and he also broke his right arm. Oooo!"

thanx much! are you familiar with phil "telegraphing" his impending demise with lyrics ranging from "soon your sailing will be over" to the last song on the last side of his last album.... "and it seems that there are no more songs".. and most chilling of all.. the pause at the end of the song.. then the backstage interview.. the end of which is phil saying "i'll be around... for a while". thanx again for the heads up on the backup guy....

That might have been from one of the postmortem compilation albums, I think the last album he released was "Gunfight at Carnegie Hall"("Power and the Glory" was a single). Almost everything I have of Phil's in on vinyl, and so I haven't been able to listen to them in years, but he remains one of my all-time favorites.

And let's not forget "there's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone", his own tombstone on the back of Rehersals - "I'll paint your memory on the monument", and "I'll sing the final song of my returnin'" when he was just a 21 year old lad. There are a number of them. But I agree, the end of "No More Songs" is the most chilling. Poor Phil. God knows he tried for years to tell people how he was feeling.

Almost hard to believe he was a hardcore alcoholic and pill attack at this point in the game, considering he always put on a good live show.

After I listened to "Phil Ochs Greatest Hits," which I *think* was his last album of new material, I said I thought he intended it to be his last album. It had a "that's it, I'm outta here" feel - but I thought it meant he was quitting recording, not life. I didn't know at the time how depressed he'd been.
On another note, I think the tombstone on the back of "Rehearsals for Retirement" referred to his lost of faith in the promise of America in the wake of the events of 1968.

I somehow have to agree with that... He might have been an alcoholic, might have been depressed. But unlike those who commit suicide, He released his emotions through his music that is such a weapon against the establishment still to this day. He lives on! I bet the establishment would like to get Socrates out of the text books and oral traditions too.

"unlike those who commit suicide, He released his emotions through his music."
I don't mean to be disrespectful, but your comment suggests taht you arent very familiar with psychology. Lots of artists kill themselves. Hemingway, Van Gogh and Kobain killed themseves despite the fact that they expressed themselves through literature, painting, and music. Phil Ochs had a history of clinical depression, bi-polar disorder. Just because he was outspoken it doesnt lend itself to conspiracy theory.

And there were these lyrics from early in Phil's Career(you can hear the song on a compilation released in the Nineties called "A Toast To Those Who Are Gone" with liner notes by Sean Penn)
Sometimes I feel that the world isn't mine
It feeds on my hunger and tears on my time And I'm tired,
Yes, I'm tired
Every face on the street is as cold the air
As hard as the pavement moves 'neath my feet
And I'm tired,
Yes, I'm tired

Phil's original intent was to sing "Here's to the State of Richard Nixon", his update of the older "Here's to the State of Mississippi" -- but the network forbade him, so he went to Plan B, "Power and the Glory." He and Jim had to quickly rehearse it backstage before going on.
