This takes me right ... ( 1 year ago by animalnation)
This takes me right back to my childhood in NY. I used to watch this program and was very fond of it. It had a nice, realistic feel--interesting plots and good acting. Not like so much of the garbage on these days. I haven't heard this theme in years. This post is fun. Thanks.

Okay, stuckinthe80s....who wrote the theme to this show? It sounds very reminiscent of other shows of the era.
Police Squad parodied this and there was a show...I think called Vice Squad with Lee Marvin whose theme song is almost exactly like the Police Squad theme and credits.

I was born in '65. Watching the show's intro just showed me where Hawaii 5-0 got their idea from when they used the light on top of a squad car similar to the one in NYPD.

"N.Y.P.D." was produced by David Susskind's Talent Associates, in assocation with ABC. They got the rights to the show for syndication, until "ABC Films" became the independent "Worldvision" in 1972. Over the years, ownership changed hands until all of the "Worldvision" library was acquired by VIACOM/CBS {"CBS/PARAMOUNT TELEVISION"} a few years ago.

One of the great happy moments of my childhood was to meet Robert Hooks in the summer of 1968 at the time he was in this great TV series! This show was superb! The many unknown guest actors would later become stars such as Al Pacino(A violent racist), Jon Voight(A serial bomber)and Robert Forster(A psycho RAMBO type soldier with BILLY JACK fighting skills).

I have been looking for this show for years. It was my favorite in the 60's. Just love Jack Warden. Check out Naked in the Streets under N.Y.P.D. Jack Warden. It is a whole show.

But you implied it.
My brother is a Lieutenant with NYPD-works in Manhattan.Best partner he ever had was a white Irishman from the same area as the Westies gang.
And he trusted that man to tell the truth way more than the critics who complain how much they miss the "good old days" when the Department was mostly one color.
And the thing I know as a police officer myself is this; When I yell "Officer needs Help" I damn sure ain't going to check how Black cops show up to help.

This is certainly one of the most apt themes in television history. It captures the atmosphere of the show perfectly. It also brings back a flood of great memories.

Wait! Now we all know that Jack Warden was Buttermaker in the "Bad News Bears" TV Series. But tell me. Was Al Pacino not on this TV Series as well?
I was looking this show up on the Internet, and it seems that Al Pacino was also a part of the Cast on the N.Y.P.D. TV Show.

Dear Jiltedin, Al Pacino only guest starred in this series. He portrayed a violent racist, who was shot and wounded in the opening scene in the park by black militants. Tony Lobianco was a semi-regular in this series , as a detective. Another semi-regular was Denise Nicholas (As Robert Hook's wife), just before she achieved fame in the "Room 222" series.
