Dont try to figure out what has been done to her vocals if you dont know shit about studio editing... theres a ton of reverb, phasing, vocoding splitting between channels and multiple choir recordings in diff layers each and everyone with their own fine tuned mixing, effects and channel selection/swapping...
The compressor helps dishing out the low (in volume) stuff while it turns volume down for the higher parts (volume) to allow for a smooth balance in the vocals.

Because that is how it works. Noone sounds good without fine tuning the vocals, altho this is extreme mixing in this song.
Normally the compressor, a channel split and a small reverb is more then enough to "phat out" the vocals thus making it more pleasant to listen to.
