Not too fast for me. Magic articulation in the central part... neither "legato" nor "staccato", rather like "portato"

Actually, Cortot's recording was faster than Horowitz's. In my opinion, this tempo is quite ideal for this piece. Any slower and it'd sound like a drag.

its a bit fast compared to the others but it still sounds good to me at this speed. and if you imagine raindrops, the speed will be exactly like his left hand notes.

i think you're both right like chopin composed the raindrop prelude when he was staying in a monastary but not in england, he was in majorca where he was sent because the good weather was meant to improve his health, but, it just rained like a mofo hence this amazing piece of music.

some people try to play the middle section incredibly slow. i think Horowitz did it almost perfectly, if not fast enough. the quarter note should equal about 80-86 bpm during that entire section. it's supposed to be kind of like a "march" of the evil rainclouds type of thing...a concept Horowitz obviously got! very good performance overall.

I believe the one you are looking for is #12.
As for this Horowitz performance I think it is masterful. I play Raindrop a little slower but like this speed. As pointed out before he and George Sand had left England and were shacking up on Majorca where he composed the 24 Preludes. Raindrop is not only about the changing weather it is a metaphor for the stormy relationship he had with Sand.

It sounds like the raindrop note is sometimes dampened while other notes are being sustained with the pedal. I wonder how this is achieved, through technique or a fourth pedal?

Haha its sad that some people would think that Chopin wrote this piece in the 1830's so that it could be used in a commercial for a video game over 150 years later.

I've played on some pianos where they do that. It's not a fourth pedal but its the regular left pedal. Like... only the lower half of the piano is sustained. I find it weird. haha, but if Vladimir wants he, it must be amazing!

i agree, also the dramatic parts of the song i think meld very well with the themes presented in the commercial, snapshots of the emotion expressed through war and the general folly of men.
