I can agree with you on that lol. Im 17, and my dad used to listen to James Taylor all the time, and only now once he's gone, have I began to listen to him. Sad though, because it brings back memories lol. regardless, he's awesome.

why is it a shame, like you said it is beautiful and he is just expressing his feelings, just sit back and listen to the beautiful music.
i just do not understand why some people think all others are wrong and shameful if they do not believe the exact same things. the world would be such a great place if all could just respect each others thoughts.

I say it's a shame because "his feelings" that he is "just expressing" are to insult others' beliefs. If the song were to belittle atheists, it would be gratuitously insulting to THEM, wouldn't it? Like Lennon's "Imagine", the arrogant conceit of it distracts from what would otherwise be a pretty song. Some atheists think that they are geniuses and everyone else is an idiot. Well James Taylor is the one who can't respect others. Just expressing MY feelings.

and my not beliveing there is a god has nothing to do with making myself feel more powerful or special, its only because i belive there is nothing that cannot be explained by science, i have seen no proof of a god.

It's the line about "their home in the sky..." It was widely known back when this song came out that that was a put-down of religious belief. It always wrecked what is an otherwise beautiful song for me -- even when I was an atheist!
For the record: most people who call themselves "Christian" are lying blasphemers and I oppose them. The Old Order Amish are probably the only true Christians. I get sick of all the putdowns of belief; didn't mean to stir up all the atheists.

I'm coming in the middle here....but let me say that a fellow named jesus never hated, but he did get angry with those who would lead people astray. Like a father who loves a young boy - nothing that boy could do would make his father hate him. Jesus is not simple ,or arrogant. If you could sit down & chat with him he could answer all your questions about science and religion, and how so many have lost the plot. A sign you're needing?Think about what his father let us do to his son.
