The thing about Thomson's HR: At any other ballpark that ball was just a fly ball out. But not at the Polo Grounds.
For whatever it's ... ( 6 months ago by davepangburn)
For whatever it's worth, and I have no rooting interest for either Dodgers or Giants, a revelation came out. Former members of the Giants team/organization fessed up to stealing the Dodger's signs. They had a guy with binoculars/telescore (can't recall exactly what) in a location to watch the pitching signals from the Dodger's catcher to his pitcher, which were then passed onto the Giants dugout. This came to light well after this Baseball by Ken Burns programs was produced.
Had the Dodgers won ... ( 6 months ago by dgendvil)
Had the Dodgers won the pennant in 1951, & 1952 & 1953, they would've won 3 pennants, & still lost to the Yankees in the World Series three times. So far no baseball team since the 1907-09 Tigers have lost 3 straight world championships in baseball.
Dumb question: Why ... ( 5 months ago by USAGiant)
Dumb question: Why was this game not a sell out? I admit this might have been the best baseball game in MLB history though.
PS Until viewing this clip, i did not know about Robinson clutch extra in homer in Philly, that forced this histroic 'sudden death' playoff series. That home is so underated in MLB history.
PS2: Why did Branca pitch to Thomson when Thomson won the 1st game with a homer?

I have mixed feelings about the whole "cheating"/sign stealing revelation. I think it is questionable at best, but even knowing the sign and what's coming does not guarantee a hit, let alone a rally of this proportion & home run to boot...but it does add an extra layer of drama, intrigue and sadness for Dodger fans...and I guess a tinge of sadness for Giants fans too- knowing the whole picture...still classic though...

hey at the end of the day the giants won you can't take that away in history. got to love the giants great rally in the ninth inning comeback just acknowledge that.

Why did Newcombe go to the clubhouse after being yanked? It was the bottom of the 9th with a trip to the World Series on the line . . . wasn't he interested in seeing what happened?

That was also a bittersweet Series for the Yankees though, because it was the last one for Joe DiMaggio and the injury to Mickey Mantle.

You're absoulutly right. Talking about Joe D. With all this steroid stuff going on look at what an even greater player he looks like now. He was a right handed hitter playing in Yankee Stadium and he hit almost 400 homers in his career. Look at Mantle, 536. No roids. Willie Mays at Candle Stick with that wind hit over 600. The secret you might ask? Simply put those guys were real men. Bless their souls.

Yes, but if they had walked Thomson they would have had to pitch to Willie Mays, who was on deck. Looking back, did they do the right thing by pitching to Thomson? - HELL NO!!!

hey dude i am only 40, never saw this, but the fact that we argue the strategy 55 years later makes baseball so special and every true fan of the game can understand this moment in sports has never been surpassed my friend
Dressen left ... ( 1 month ago by YouMuseMe)
Dressen left Newcombe out there way too long - he was "done" and had pitched excessive innings in previous games. Also, a better matchup would have been Preacher Roe vs. Thomson. If Mays came up next, Branca had owned him. I think the manager blew this game, not Branca.
