Certainly the stage setting it's not the usual one in the program recordings. They used to shot in a jazz club in Madrid with brick walls and the program name in blue neon behind the musicians, none of it is visible in this video.

Such elegant piano playing! Teddy Wilson has always appealed to me much more than did Art Tatum.

What a sad sight to see Ben Webster struggle.
Though he still plays a ballad like none other.

When a Ben Webster ballad would come on the radio, it would just stop me dead; whatever i was doing, i just had to stop everything and just listen. Arguably, the greatest ballad player in jazz history. "Prisoner Of Love" with Coleman Hawkins. Get It. "The Nearness of You", as part of one of those Granz jam sessions is another one that cant be missed.

A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand(SORRY BOUT SPAM THIS REALLY FREAKS ME)

Struggle how? He is in total control.
He is sitting because of bad knees if thats what you mean. the lip thing isn't because of a bad reed, it's his usual style.

That little run ... ( 2 months ago by relientkurt)
That little run thing he does at 0:40-0:41...I really like that, what's the basic concept behind that? I mean music theory-wise, is he outlining a chord, or what...
He is playing ... ( 2 months ago by BuckshotLaFunke)
He is playing around the VI chord of the tonic (I). If they play the tune in F, Ben is making an embellishment around D minor. From there he goes to the II minor chord, then to the V dominant and then back to the tonic, which indicates the key in which the whole song is played.

It's a chromatic ... ( 2 months ago by Vayshen)
It's a chromatic quick-lick which is based off of a target note you want to go play.
Random example: Say you play a line that leads to a D, you would swiftly play D Eb D Db D. If you play that quickly (like Ben does at 38-42) you should get that sound.
So essentially you're outlining your target note, or the last note of a line. Very common, handy tool. =)
How strange that ... ( 2 months ago by fediya)
How strange that THE MOST LYRICAL tenor man in the history of jazz was incredibly volatile and occasionally violent. But I guess, a short fuse could coehist with a warm heart. I tip my hat to Ben and Teddy. Man, it's sublime beyond imagination.
