I respect your opinion completely. I just can't put him on the same level as clif, lee, or miles. for me harry isn't even close. out of all the trumpet players I have met I have never herd one say aything about harry james. as there favoutire, or his sound in a lession. so he just doesn't do it for me.

His early stuff was great and did have a lot of feeling...then he went "Hollywood" - married a movie star and all the feeling was gone - seems like he just played for the money after a certain point

I am a 53 year old professional trumpet player. I have either seen or heard all the greats. Harry James was the greatest trumpet player that EVER lived. He could play anything. He was very close to Miles and Dizzy and I have heard him play just like Miles and Diz. He was the only player I ever saw who could play great while drunk. Forget his commercial success. Study his 1954-1966 recordings. Wow!

I know an jazz trumpeter from the 50's and 60's by the name of Don Ferrara. Played with Gerry Mulligan and a host of others. I asked him once about Harry James. He said the same thing about his tone, that it was one of the best ever. He also said Harry James could play any style as good as anyone.

Miles was the poet of the trumpet and surely you have to say James was a jazz guy despite his commercial successes. Don't forget Miles sold out in the 70's.

Hi! I'm afraid it should be "Artie Shaw". Well, Artie had more musical taste but he reflected the same kind of magic. Harry never read books but Artie was also a very intellectual novelist. I love both!
