i'd like to think that animal sanctuaries dedicated to the well being of these animals (which are being reintroduced to the park with some success) aren't jokes. they're important and helpful and the national park system in this country provides profound benefits to habitat preservation for the other animals we share this earth with.

Still resorting to name calling I see. I can play that game, but I do not feel the need to stoop that low. The Discovery Center creates facade by making people think that this is the real deal and is inherently dangerous for the survival of the animals as well as for humans. These glorified zoos aren't doing any species any favors. The National Parks are better, but still not the same as the true wilderness. Better management, and less tourists is the real answer.

i'm not sure it's about the "true wilderness" more than it's about observation and awareness. the discovery center and the national park provide the opportunity for every person to learn from and respect this wilderness. i would agree that some people abuse this opportunity and their actions are subject to penalty under federal law. still isn't the first step in these animal's survival awareness? enough people have to care to make a change and i think the discovery center is doing just that.

You are correct on that point, however I do believe the curators of these types of centers need to re-afirm the fact that these are wild animals. How many times has someone been hurt or killed because they thought a bison was "cute and cuddley"? Or been mauled by a bear because they got between a cub and it's mother? The animal is the one who really loses on that deal.

ok now i'm confused. i thought your point was that these "zoos" weren't real enough for the average person and this in someway is harmful to animals and people. i'm still don't understand that connection but now you seem upset about the ignorance people show in approaching wild animals. i know for a fact that curators of these facilities stress to the breaking point the consequences of invading on these animals' space. i'm just not sure what you're arguing anymore.

I think ANY time people have a chance to see wild animals and learn about them is valuable. Is it authentic? No. Is it meant to be? I doubt it. But if some 10 year old from the Bronx goes to Yellowstone (the actual park not the discovery center) and sees a bear or wolves or bizon in its natural habitat (albeit de-sensitized to human presence) that kid could grow up to make a difference in the world.

Anyone that says 'you have to go out and see them 'for real' isn't thinking; not everyone has the skill to camp in the wild. These parks give them at least a chance to see these animals in relative safety in their natural habitat. It astounds me how rigid and elitist people can be in their ideas on things. Life is filled with chances to learn and experience every day- I pity those that don't use every one of them and insist on only the most 'authentic' or 'best' things... its so limiting.
