A curiosity: a fragment of "Hoochie Coochie Man" by Buddy Guy in 1969, arguably from the same dates as the SuperSHow track already on YouTube too. Sorry but I actually don't have the complete song!

interesting point. race doesn't make much difference to me when it comes to guitar playing, but when it comes to singing the blues and in harmony with the playing then you can usually tell who has more soul than the next man

ask any of the old timers and they will tell you experience has everything to do with it. This is documented in many interviews. Muddy even said that his blues was not the same when in chicago as it was on the plantation because his experience was different. You cant fake blues, you have to be extremely honest with yourself when playing it. If you did not grow up as a sharecropper, dont pretend you did. Just sing blues about your own experiences even if they are not as dramatic..

Its when people try to replicate exactly what went on back then that it starts to sound watered down (or what a lot of people call "white"). Its easy to tell when a person is playing a song about a feeling They havent felt. We need more originality in blues these days. Im not talking about mixing in rock or funk, Im talking about people writing and playing about thier own honest feelings and not trying to pretend like thier the most lowdown person in the club because the put a fedora on..
Experience changes ... ( 3 weeks ago by NumbNutz12000)
Experience changes the story, definitely. Of course the subject matter and emotion will be different between Chicago and the Plantation, but that doesn't change the fact that the music came out of him with conviction in both settings. Any man is capable of playing or singing from the bottom of his soul, regardless of his experience or skin color. The old timers you speak of all had different experiences. Not all of them were slaves or sharecroppers. They all did, however, love making music.

yes I agree. I think we are starting to say the same thing in different ways now. I am not one to think that blues is dead. It just has to stop being a museum piece and get back to relavent issues for today. It can never be the same as it used to be, but it can still be just as great(my opinion).
That's absolutely ... ( 3 weeks ago by NumbNutz12000)
That's absolutely right, and I can name just as many names as I did before, both black and white, all of which have (or had) as much soul as the next guy. Johnny Lang, Gary Moore, SRV, even Eric Clapton and John Mayer sing with as much soul as B.B. King or Robert Cray ever did.

well now we're getting into musical opinions. I tend to disagree with what you said. I dont think any of those guys could come close to touching the old guys and some are exactly what Im talking about trying to be something they're not. What they certainly arent are blues. They are all rockers and Im pretty sure they'd even admit that they are more rock than blues. There is an obvious and major difference. Of course this is going to be like arguing religion so this is all my opinion..

exactly. when i wanna hear whitey sing the blues I'll listen to the blues not in the genre of music but in their own unreplicated style of music. Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, hank williams, johnny cash (too many others) are so much enjoyable to me to listen to rather than some whitey continuously singing the 12 bar blues. And I do by hearing these guys get the same emotions felt as when hearing negro blues if you wanna call it that

Again thought not all artists especially the rockers are guilty of continously imitating the blues, but when they do it can get pretty annoying, especially when the audience believes they now know the blues by hearing their contemporary artist perform when that same audience wouldn't even know who buddy guy is

I so much rather prefer eric clapton's derek and dominoes country blues pickin (aside from the overrated layla) than when he tries to replicate robert johnson or buddy guy. and as for john mayer I really like the fact that he is always talking about blues as an art form at his concerts

well man, I think your a little too "black and white" here. You're discounting some great white players who learned from the old school guys and have a lot of soul. There are great white bluesmen out there, even singers, you need to dig deeper.. And if more white people had real gospel choirs, we would have more great white blues singers..

Haha, John Mayer...seriously? That guy is a joke compared to BB King. SRV was a rare exception and the real deal, but man am I sick of seeing middle age white guys playing mediocre blues in every bar I pass!

Read what B.B. thinks about JM. Yes, he's a suburbanite white kid who's never known struggle in his life, and he tends to make kinda faggy music.... but ask anybody who knows blues guitar and they'll tell you he's a hellhound.

John Mayer may be a ... ( 1 week ago by jeianafa12547dj)
John Mayer may be a worthy blues player and knows it to a tee, but the fact is he plays for the major corporations and never sings the blues. He doesn't show his soul like the great blues players Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, B.B., and of who cant forget Jimi and Buddy. SRV was great as well but the legacy of blues as a delta is fading there's a few left but not many.

Oh come on. "Show his soul" huh? Robert Johnson was an incredible musician, an amazing guitarist and exceptional vocalist, and that's what made him a legend. Not his ~naked soul~. The same goes for Jimi. And Muddy waters was the most commercially succesful blues musician of the 50's. You don't think if he was in Mayer's shoe's he be doing the exact same thing Mayer is right now? JM is no more hungry for success and commercialism than Muddy or B.B. were in the height of their careers.
I love JM, but he ... ( 1 week ago by parkercr)
I love JM, but he isn't a pure bluesman, he is a musican that plays the blues. Howling wolf, magic Sam, Freddie King, those guys were blues man, Mayer got popular with pop, and songs like why georgia and your body is a wonderland. He sold out to the pop, and for that reason, he can play the blues, but he is not the blues
and one more thing ... ( 1 week ago by parkercr)
and one more thing numbnutz, there are people like Chris Whitley and Doyle Bramhall II that are still playing old blues, (Whitley is dead0 and didn't sell out to do, and are at the height of their careers
You'll get no ... ( 1 week ago by NumbNutz12000)
You'll get no argument from me there -- he's not "the blues" -- but who cares? He doesn't have to conform to someone else's idea of what's pure to be true to himself. If anything, that makes him even better than the rest because he's crossed genres, which no matter how you cut it, takes talent. Sure, he's a very pop musician - but the fact is, he makes music that millions of people love. You can't be a sellout if nobody wants to hear your music.
"Old blues". Again ... ( 1 week ago by NumbNutz12000)
"Old blues". Again, you can't be a sellout if nobody wants to hear what you're playing. We've all heard 12-bar blues, we've all heard the standards. I'd be willing to bet that those guys have never had a chance to sell out because the world's already heard their flavor of the blues. People don't line up in droves to hear oldies. But I absolutely guarantee you - if they were offered million dollar contracts, they'd sign in a hearbeat.
Um maybe you don't ... ( 1 week ago by jeianafa12547dj)
Um maybe you don't understand "major corporations" when I expect to see a blues player, play I expect to hear a story. Not the same main stream stuff from basic off the street guitarist/performers. The words that you just spoke only mirror what I ment by the small fracture of a phrase. That was my point John is just a corporate label that's it at this point. So when I say they shoe they're soul they're playing the music they want Mayer has complaid about the music he plays.
