I love this song and always have. Though they credit Tammi with signing it though if you listen close enough it really sounds like Valerie Simpson. Tammi was really sick when this album was being made and died not long after. I believe Marvin even admitted years later it was Val. It still was a great song. I loved Marvin and Tammi best duet ever!

I think your wrong there. I am usually right when it comes to sounds. Onion song for sure its not tammi, good lovin ain't easy - is probably not tammi(the music seem to cover and only the chours sounds tammi) But this song goes with you'e all I need and etc it's tammi. but what a tragic lyrics, really gets me, love it though

Yes, Marvin actually did admit that his singing partner on this song was Valarie Simpson as he told it to David Ritz when they were writing his biography: Divided Soul.

I totally agree. This girl has a great voice...but different "soul". She is just trying to imitate Tammy in this one. Except of course Tammy sings like that cause she is sick, as you said! Anyway, it's great!

In Marvin's 1985 biography "DIVIDED SOUL," MARVIN told writer DAVID RITZ, VALERIE SIMPSON sang in place of TAMMI TERRELL after the "YOU'RE ALL I NEED TO GET BY" album, their 2nd album. Their 3rd LP"EASY"with "WHAT YOU GAVE ME" & their last hit "THE ONION SONG" was also VALERIE. She was also producing & writing the Marvin & Tammi songs with NICK ASHFORD. Marvin said Berry Gordy convinced him it was a way for Tammi's family to make money to pay for her hospital bills.

i have tammi terrell story written by her sister, and what your saying is true as tammi was some times to sick,to record.so valerie would take over the vocals..on most of the tracks.

I think David Ruffin, the greatest of the Temptations and Tammi's old boyfriend, has the best version of this song. Ruffin sings it with a lot more soul.
