The Beach Boys - Live on Ready Steady Go! 1964

Uploaded by: humanoidboogie
Video Description:
The Beach Boys' first UK TV appearance, November 6, 1964.
Following afternoon rehearsals, their performance of 'I Get Around' and 'When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)' - complete with false start - is transmitted live this evening. The show's co-host Keith Fordyce asks Mike about surfing and Brian about his thoughts on Britain, but questions and replies are drowned out by hysterical screams from the studio audience. This performance becomes the first chance that TV viewers in the UK have to see the group in action. Brian tells Earl Leaf: "Ready Steady Go! was a blast! But they pulled Mike into the crowd off camera, which was kind of stupid."

These songs are true classics. Some songs sound dated after only a few years, but these songs by the Beach Boys sound as fresh and innovative today as the day they were first heard on the radio. They will still sound great 200 years from now! That is the mark of true musical genius!

2000 years from now they are still going to sound great. Brian is one of the true great geniuses of music and knew how to make fantastic songs sound timeless and unbeatable in so many ways.

Love it! It's rare to see them actually playing live this early but they could really do it - especially Dennis who I always thought of as a kind of Chris Partridge. Too bad Mike was such a knob though.

I've been a would-be student of the BB's for a long time, and I always thought so too- BUT Murry was the REAL knob.
Thank God for Mike's ambition, lyrics, low voice, and he's really an ace front man.
If it wasn't for his critical eye, Pet Sounds would have been the end- and obviously, there was much more to come.
Legal wrangling aside, it's the music that counts.
You're right about Dennis-this is one of the only live clips I've heard where he's not rushing the tempo. Cheers!

I shouldn't be too hard on Mike. Maybe "ham" is more apt than "knob". I have to say that despite tantalizing fragments, nothing that came after Good Vibrations comes close to what came before. Even Mike couldn't keep BW sane. And I think Murry was more than a knob - he was evil (according to "Heroes and Villains" anyway). Thanks!

Always great to see five minutes of the most innovative white r&r band the U.S. has ever produced. And no lip-synching either! This clip might seem quaint now, but trust me, they were miles ahead of white American bands with live performance in 1964.
