Well the russians needed H-Bombs... Americans had superior missile technology and could actually deliver a payload almost right on target and a 10 kiloton fission bomb would probably suffice for anything we targeted. However, the russians were a little behind on missile tech, and so they focused a great deal more attention to the size of their bombs, hence the Tsar, that way, as you said, they wouldn't have to hit the target to destroy it.

Well.... We don't. =D Happy? Way back when in the cold war the Russian's had horribly inaccurate missile tech, and so they relied on the enormous size of their weapons to take out a target, though they never actually used any of the aforementioned weapons. America on the other hand had very good missile technology, and thus had no need for the H-Bomb. The only reason we made them was basically to continue the competition....

Well close... You use Fission to cause fusion, but the Uranium is depleted on the initial fission reaction to produce the hydrogen fusion reaction, so no further fission reaction is caused after the initial reaction... Oh and yes America made the bomb, yes we had it... Lol never argue with conspiracy theorists...

You are correct. My error. What is also interesting about this first explosion is that the "Bomb" looked more like a factory than a weapon. The process of creating the event required huge industrial construction, and lowering temperatures to the lowest ever recorded on earth. For people to invest so much time and resources in potentially destroying life on earth is insane.

the russians dropped Tsar Bomba, the 50 megaton yielding Hydrogen Bomb from a plane. Had to attach a parachute to the bomb to give the pilot of the plane a chance to escape.
