Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks 1/2 (Ouverture)

Uploaded by: carminum
Video Description:
Very moving performance on 23 august 1991 of Handels Music for the Royal Fireworks by a huge baroque band on period instruments, consisting of 24 oboes, 16 bassoons, 1 contra-bassoon, 9 trumpets, 9 horns, 3 pairs of timpani and 5 drums, conducted by Robert King.
The Ouverture is enlightened in this broadcast by the BBC by a dramatization in paper cut-outs of the events at the very first performance during which because of the improperly handled fireworks the concert pavillion was burned down.
The recording with my old Telefunken machine has a slightly overmodulated sound, but it is not too disturbing and does not harm the overall grandioseness and beautiful splendor of the performance.

The overdotting is likely very aunthentic baroque performance practice, but personally I like non-overdotted performances of this overture. Sounds much grander to my ears. But this is an interesting arrangement with no strings! Apparently closer to what old King George II wanted. Good one :) ....BTW, I've always known the name to be George Frederic Handel - anglicised, no umlauts, no foreign spellings, just as Handel wanted.

This piece is new to me. I like how the percussion seems to evoke the sound of the fireworks. Anyone else get that impression?
L'interprétation ... ( 2 weeks ago by NicolasSachot)
L'interprétation est un peu saccadée, pour ne pas dire martiale à certains moments, mais ça a son charme aussi. Haendel était un grand Monsieur, definitely.

I would like anyone to post other versions, because I remember having listened to better ones. Without being an expert (far from that), this sounds a little mechanical (slightly like a march band) in certain passages. I have even an old tape which sounds much "smoother" and even in the trumpets more melodic.
This performance is ... ( 1 week ago by InsufferableKIA)
This performance is on period instruments. The sound quality is not meant to be that of instruments today. That's what makes it so cool. I got to play the Royal Fireworks at IDRS this last July. That was awesome.

un po troppo marziale, ma nn è di cattivo ascolto, anzi, secondo me l'allegro lo fa rendere parecchio, solo una nota negativa sulle percussioni, troppo forti

This is authentic, using Baroque instruments and interpretation. That's the reason it doesn't sound like other recordings.
