Lighfoot is the best lyricist in the English language, bar none. This particular song, however, is not his best work. Carole King is "slightly above average," don't know Newbury, Guthrie is fair, and Webb is complete crap ("MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, all the sweet green icing flowing down," for God's sake...)
Peace,
Toby

I take it you like Lighfoot! I do as well, but when it comes to pening tunes what tells the tale is recordings by other artist and number of plays and sales of records. I have been around the business for years, and I assure you Godon Lighfoot is one of my favorite entertainers, but as far as money made off of lyrics---No one does Lightfoot songs profesionally except, you guessed it, Lilghtfoot! Again, go to BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC and see just who writes the songs that artist want to record.

Just one other point and I will bow out of this conversation. If you don't know who Mickey Newbury is nor have listened to his music, then you are in the wrong conversation. I know very little about music compared to some folks, but just about anyone who has ever penned a tune, rock, pop, country, or soul, in the last 35 years probably just pooped their pants when you said you never heard of Mickey Newbury! You are really in the wrong conversation, for sure..

yep..but let's emember this oe one of Gord's..few efforts at "blues"..and I personally feel it is one of his best from his early days..one of those toonz where you put it on..and swoon and cruise about the house just mellowing out..best lyricist?..again YEP!..he makes songs that you wish would go on forever..

The gifted Red Shea always made Gord`s music sparkle that much more, just listen to the early stuff and how his tasty playing brought the tunes to another level.

I, too, was saddened to hear of Red Shea's recent death. His work with Gordon Lightfoot was truly remarkable! This is such an easy to listen to kind of song...very laid back and relaxing with it's lyrics, and the music is nice and easy for the ears and the soul. Not as well known as many of GL's other's, but very, very good song, in it's own right. As for me, well, I love it! Thanks for posting it! Yes, thanks very much!

I've done exactly the same thing. I've been a GL fan for 40 years, have seen him in concert at least 10 times, and NEVER tire of listening to him. For every big radio hit, there are 100 little known gems that are at least as good. He's unique and timeless, and still going strong at 70(?).
