The weren't referring to the Beatles per se, but the play "Beatlemania", which was played by four actors. It played in London and Broadway (New York) at the time.

I hate to disapoint you, but punk was not a sound. It was a MOVEMENT in the mid to late seventies, and mostly in New York. The Sex Pistols and the Clash are the exceptions, because it's generally the CBGB scene. The Talking Heads, Patti Smith, and Television are punk, and they are nothing like the Ramones or the Clash. Infact, the first punk band is often sited as The New York Dolls.
