They attacked Pearl Harbour because they wanted to get rid of the American Aircraft Carriers.
In World War II, Aircraft Carriers=Power
Without the air craft carriers America would have not been able to defeat Japan. However, when the Japanese attacked the air craft carriers were not in Pearl Harbour, they were on patrol. If the Japanese could have gotten rid of them they would have won against the Americans.

Read your history book idiot, Admiral Yamamoto called the USA a "sleeping GIANT" as they withdrew the aircraft carriers from the attack on pearl Harbor after the final wave had landed and they told him that the American Aircraft Carriers had not been taken out.
