About 2 times a year, our church (The Rising Tide) goes to Skid Row to help out a church/organization there called Set Free. It is directly in the worst part of Skid Row where literally everyone sleeps in the streets, does drugs, and urinates on the sidewalks. It is quite possibly one of the filthiest areas in the United States. It is also home to some of the most spiritually lost people in the world. When you live in a place like that, you have no ambition, zero hope, and turn to other things such as drugs and violence. This is exactly the type of place Jesus would reach out to if he were here today.
What Set Free does is fantastic. Although there are many charitees and soup kitchens in the area, Set Free really understands the phrase "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." Set Free, under the leadership of pastor Ron (2:47 in the video), strives to get people off the streets and start a new life where they can take care of themselves. After church services every single day in the heart of Skid Row, Pastor Ron invites anyone who wants to change their life to leave first thing in the morning to go hundreds of miles outside the city to a desert ranch to de-tox and get them on the right foot. There, the moto is "Beans, rice and Jesus Christ". The people are taught work skills there, teach them how to be men and women of God and help them get jobs and eventually to support themseleves. Pastor Ron was one of the men who did drugs on the street, and after one little girl came up to him and said "Jesus loves you", it changed his life. Hundreds upon hundreds o
f lives have been changed and saved due to Set Free Church.
What our church does (The Rising Tide) is help them not only financially, but help get people around the streets to the church service that night and the next nights. We go into the middle of the city, next to the drug addicts and tell them not only about Set Free Church but about Jesus. It is so rewarding to see people we talk to in the streets come to the service that night and sit next to you.
