It's a resonator. A guitar that's built (partly) of steel in stead of wood (slightly simplified). Generally they are played with a bottleneck slide, though they also sound great "plain".

She's so fantastic. Her band, especially around her albums "Blue Light 'Til Dawn" and "New Moon Daughter" are classic albums that really should be studied by female jazz vocalists.
I really like her approach to jazz. The guitar, instead of the piano, is used in a very textural way. She's one of my favorite jazz vocalists next to Diana Krall and Shirley Horn.
"Harvest Moon" was from her 1996 recording "New Moon Daughter," which won a Grammy.

I think the mess up was with the sound. I have played with Marvin and know that he likes his guitar sound flat. Take another listen and you will hear how the sound changes during the intro.
