GISELE MacKENZIE presents Miyoshi Umeki

Uploaded by: VideosTimes2
Video Description:
The charm and natural talents of Gisele MacKenzie made her 1957-1958 TV series one of the best of its kind! With high production values, a gifted host and great associates, like a fine musical director (Axel Stordahl), the show won many awards. Here lovely, multi-talented, Gisele MacKenzie welcomes Miyoshi Umeki as her guest. MS Umeki had just won an Academy Award for her outstanding performance in the film "Sayonara." Sadly, MS Umeki died of cancer on August 28, 2007. As a tribute to both Gisele and Miyoshi, here is their cute banter and Miyoshi's interpretation of "How Deep Is the Ocean" from Gisele's March 29, 1958 live television show.

Unbelievable! This song was featured on Miyoshi's LP Miyoshi Umeki sings for Arthur Godfrey, and is one of her best, her rendered flawlessly. Perhaps lip-sinked, but nonetheless a perfect example of how she got her start in post-war Japan singing for American GIs.

How deep is the ocean, How high is the sky?
How many times do I think of you?
How many roses are sprinkled with dew?
How far would I travel to be where you are?
How far is the journey from here to a star?
And, if I ever lost you, how much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky?
*(O, please try to see the constancy [of] this heart!)
Sayonara, Miyoshi-chan!

I doubt if this was lip-synced! The production values on "The Gisele MacKenzie Show" were the best...Gisele's orchestra was that of Axel Stordahl, who featured LOTS of strings, as was also reflected on Gisele's RCA Victor album "Gisele" which was also arranged and conducted by Mr. Stordahl. June Hutton, Axel's wife, was a good friend of Gisele's, too!

Gisele was on NBC's Saturday night schedule at 9:30pm(et), opposite CBS' "HAVE GUN- WILL TRAVEL" {which was why Gisele's series lasted only one season}. Jack Benny actually co-produced her series through his "J&M Productions" outfit.
