I'm not sure the Steelers would have crushed the 49ers. As good as the 70's Steelers defense was, i think the '89 49ers would have given them fits. The two reasons are, the Steelers never had seen the likes of the west coast offense, and they never faced an offense as explosive as the 49ers had. It would've been a great game.

I agree JMullown...and the 49ers team of 1989 was not even the best of the 49er super bowl teams...the 1984 team and the 1994 team were each probably better teams...very explosive

I miss that voice that was know for Sunday afternoon football ,Summerall was one of the last great broadcasters for football hearing his play-by-play was a real joy as kid growing up as a 49ers fan I enjoyed hearing that voice say "Montana looks fires Rice touchdown San Francisco" I'm glad I've got those old games to watch from time to time and listen to a great broadcaster. I wish Joe Buck would take a hike he does not have the voice like Summerall did that's for sure.

The 1989 49ers were the BEST TEAM in NFL HISTORY. Find me another team who had the Greatest QB of All-Time, the Greatest WR of All-Time, and the Greatest Safety of All-Time all on the field at one time? You Can't! They had 3 of the greatest players at their positions of All-Time on the field at once! Many don't remember how close this team was to being undefeated and they DOMINATED the BEST OF THE BEST IN THE PLAYOFFS!

I guess we can finally remove the Pats from the annals of greatest teams of all time. Great dynasties NEVER lose Super Bowls seeing as Bradshaw, Montana and even Aikman were unbeaten on the NFL's largest stage.

When Summerall mentions that it is a beautiful day in San Francisco and that "some of the other parts of the country aren't so lucky", he's talking about one of the worst Arctic cold waves ever to hit the country...
Temperatures were below zero throughout most of the central and eastern US...NYC had a Thanksgiving snowstorm and then the coldest December on record.
It was snowing in Tampa, Florida, the Florida Panhandle, southern Georgia, Charleston, SC, and snowing a LOT in North Carolina

as 9ers fan I have to slightly disagree Ken, this was a team that had just lost Walsh, that was literally closing out games as a family, putting up monster scores, and blowing out the Superbowl in fashion that is still yet to be topped.
This was the team most sportscasters compared the 2007 Patriots to more than the '72 Dolphins during most of the regular ('07) season.

December 24, 1989 was one of the all-time weather days in NFL history. Games at the Meadowlands and Philly had chill factors below zero, and down South it was even worse. Temperatures were in the 30s in Tampa, the 40s in Miami, in the teens in Dallas (where the toilets froze as someone mentioned) and in Atlanta (the Falcons played outdoors then) it was in the teens and a crowd of only around 5,000 people showed up. Even in New Orleans they had a tiny crowd because it was so cold and wintry out.

Wow, I remember this game. The Bears were blanked 26-0. As a Bears fan, 1989 was a rough year. They started 4-0, then 6-4 (after beating the steelers 20-0). Suddenly, everything hit rock bottom, they lost the final six games. However, the Bears played well they next couple of years after that. Memories!!!

San Francisco had the Team of the Decade, and as a city, it had a heart that overcame so much.
More power to them!!
