the borealis was a ship owned by the rival company, aperture science (which is the place where portal takes place). the two companies, black mesa and aperture science, were both working on the same thing, and the borealis dissapeared (through a portal, some thought) while they were conducting experiments on it.
thats what i have learned, and figured out, anyway. as for why it has never been mentioned; thats easy. its because it didnt exist until they added it to the plot in ep2
