Uploaded by: kpjjazz
Video Description:
In 1952 Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie appeared on a New York TV show to receive DownBeat Plaques from Earl Wilson and Leonard Feather and then play 'Hot House' with what appears to be the regular studio group of Dick Hyman piano,Sandy Block bass and Charlie Smith bass. True to a certain extent. Bird does play a lot of cliches especially in his later recordings. Cannonballs best playing is certainly more imaginative than birds later stuff on up tempo. But check out Birds great ballad playing no cliches there - Cannonball cannot compete in my opinion. However, I love them both and as far as the blues goes, they are both unrivaled amongst Alto players. We can learn equally from both.

I agree! here are hardly ANY players that come close these days. There is one player that, in my opinion, is the best EVER. Paquito D'rivera. I Like him because in ANY of his solos, you can feel it, you know? I like him because he plays with more emotion. but then again, different styles of playing. Bebop for me is a little emotionless. However, they are all GREAT players, just personal preference I guess.

minor7b5: when are we going to see your post on YouTube...I think never, given that you're multitude of asinine comments on many jazz greats' YouTube posts are just another example of a Walter Mitty - like, self-aggrandising dim wit, who likes to see his 'name' used in the same sentence as jazz legends.
Get ukelele & a kazoo......that sounds more like your pace of creative flair, given the dross you serve up on YouTube

You guys got to ... ( 1 month ago by lpsling)
You guys got to remember that Cannonball and Paquito only exist musically because of Bird's innovations, harmonically, rythmically and melodically. NOBODY played like that before Bird. He invented this modern way of playing and everybody on every instrument has been influenced to play his way or to try and expand on it. In bop, to play "cliches" meant to play common Bird licks and still does. He wasnt playing anyone's licks but his own even tho he loved Prez's playing when he was young.

Yeh you right. He is talking down to them and calls them "boys"...the two greatest genuises American music has ever had. Bird and Dizzy had to put up with this constant racist shit of the 40s/50s. Bird knew a lot about politics, quantum physics, modern classical composers...a whole range of subjects. This TV host was a mental midget next to two giants.

I don't think he said 'Boys' with racist connotations implied. It was more of a general term used in a passing way. Although, im from a modern day society where the term 'Boys' is now accepted, back in the 50's it did have racial undertones.

The racism issue ... ( 2 weeks ago by StevieHendrix92)
The racism issue has already been addressed in the comments, what I'm most happy with however, is that Bird and Dizzy were mature enough to deal with it so performances like this would be filmed so people like us could truly appreciate it.
