Nick Cave is a true musical icon. The sound of his voice when he's doing the "scratch, scrape, scratch" "yak, yak, yak" bits at the end is incredible. It's like he's been possessed by the devil or something.

Nick Cave is incredibly poetic and intelligent, I can give you that. But Birthday Party is pretty messy music, if music it can be called.
and you can't deny the bassist was being intentionally humorous.

I dunno... its actually kind of structured if you listen to it... I mean, all the instruments are playing the same song, its not like when you have to listen to your friends new EP with a coat hanger in your mouth!!!
I agree its not exactly the later somewhat melodic Nick Cave, but I'd say give it a chance. Try "She's Hit" or "6 Inch Gold Blade" first, they're a bit easier on the ears.
If I'm to be honest I kind of prefer The Birthday Party to the Bad Seeds, but thats just me...

Nothing's wrong with the bassist being humorous, in fact that's probably the best part of the video--I couldn't stop laughing!
I know it's sposed to be messy music--I'm wading through a bunch of avant-garde/post-punk stuff, just trying to see what I really like. I'm a fan of Public Image Ltd., for instance. And I was just curious about Nick Cave's beginnings.
I was just.. very surprised and confused by this video/music. Hah, but I'm glad I got a reaction--that counts for a lot, actually.

I just wanted to thank you for being very constructive and offering some listening suggestions, cos I really do want to like Birthday Party. This is generally the era and genre of music that I like the most. And, of course, Nick Cave.
I was just oddly confused/mesmerized/offput by the music and the bassist.. hence the extreme, vulgar reaction. But opposite to jimrimdead, I meant it in a positive way. :P

I wish i could form a band on this vein, but its so hard to find others willing to. I wonder if some weirdos around the world could form a band without living in the same place, just putting all our experiments together, like an exquisite corpse, i would be more than infatuated with it, message me if interested. Yeah, I kind of had the same reaction at first and their LP ended up in a drawer for a few months, but then I gave it another chance and it really grew on me. I think thats what the band were going for really, but the songs I mentioned above are actually quite catchy - on condition that you allow the term "catchy" a VERY broad meaning.
The same thing happened with Crime and the City Solution and now they're one of my favourite bands, although I'll admit that they have a few more catchy songs...
