Silent Pepsi Commercial - Interview - Behind The Scenes

Uploaded by: MisterDonnieDarko2
Video Description:
Amid the wall-to-wall sound during next Sunday's Super Bowl, one commercial from PepsiCo could send some viewers grabbing for their remotes to check whether they'd accidentally hit the mute button.
The pre-game advertisement features a joke that originates from the deaf community and will play out on screen over 60 seconds of total silence, a veritable eternity when it comes to the noisiness of Super Bowl ads.
"It's a popular story and we just turned it into an advertisement," said Clay Broussard, a supply and logistics manager at PepsiCo who proposed the idea for the ad. "This is the PepsiCo flavor of that joke."
The joke goes like this: Two guys are driving to their friend Bob's house to watch the Super Bowl. Once they get to Bob's street, neither knows which house is his. They sit in the car, arguing, until one of them has an idea. He starts laying on the horn, and one by one, the houses light up and dogs start barking.
One house stays dark and quiet: It's Bob's.
Deaf people will be falling out of their chairs in disbelief, National Association of the Deaf president Bobbie Beth Scoggins wrote in an e-mail response to questions. Hearing people, Scoggins wrote, will stop what they're doing to see why there are no sounds. She believes it's an historic first for an ad featuring American Sign Language to get such prominent play.
"I was glad to see this part of deaf culture awareness shared in a most clever way," Scoggins, who is deaf, wrote by e-mail as she was traveling.
Broussard, who plays Bob in the commercial, has worked for PepsiCo in Dallas for 27 years. He got involved in the deaf community through a church he and his wife attended, where the services were conducted entirely in sign language. Broussard is not deaf.
The two actors who play Bob's friends - Brian Dowling and Darren Therriault are also PepsiCo employees, and are deaf. Dowling works for Frito-Lay in Arizona, and Therriault works for PepsiCo in Chicago.
Broussard worked on the ad concept on his own time. He said, "This was all extra credit."
It was 18 months before he showed it to senior managers, who decided they wanted it for the Super Bowl.
The ad was directed by Baker Smith, with creative help from BBDO-NY and placement help from OMD, which both worked on the project pro bono. A PepsiCo spokeswoman declined to say how much the ad cost.

That being said, the news story in this video that is covering the ad needs to be captioned!

I was told in was shown in the pre-game part of the super bowl.Either way I love pepsi for doing it, it is about time they include the deaf culture. Most commercials include other culture groups so now maybe more will include the deaf and hard of hearing.

WOW! Yeah deaf awarness, not that i would know how hard being deaf is, but it is a really nice statement. (plus i know ASL [American Sign Language] so I was surprised to see a commercial with signing on it) that one guy was right, "You don't have to be deaf to understand the joke."

I don't mean to be negative but I thought the point was to be inclusive though rather than exclusive, to raise awareness about access. A person whose deaf would have gotten the gist of a commercial without subtitles or ASL; what's a person whose blind to get out of this one? Almost a minute of dead air. What good does the two dimensional braiile tagline do for someone who can't see it? I get the point, believe me, great ad, I just think the point should be made, 2 cents.
who is this person ... ( 6 months ago by Hajiroku)
who is this person talking about this ad excluding blind people? This ad was made for deaf awareness......and if someones blind they wouldnt really notice that they were excluded cuz well.......they cant see the superbowl or the ad.......
Well aside from that I loooved the comercial. I use asl and personally i think this was great! I hope to see more comercials like this in the future.

I am deaf, and I have many blind friends. When you thing about it Blind people have the radio. Radio advertising, ect. What do the deaf have? TV! Sometimes sub titles move too fast, and you can't read their lips as most people don't annunciate their words anymore. So we miss a lot of things! So is it really THAT bad that we had ONE commercial? You have no idea what it is like dealing with this. I personally love the fact SOMEONE took the time to think about us equally. THANK YOU Pepsi! lol...
I just read that ... ( 5 months ago by Rainbowpryde23)
I just read that and realized I totally typed a dramatic YOU DON'T KNOW!!! deal there... That is not at all how I meant that line... damn non expression typing!
P.S. This is accurate in where they say it is a joke, it is meant to be laughed at! lol.. I know I did! :-D

Haijoku: Substitute radio for TV 1928 world series for this superbowl.
10 guys no f'n women allowed ;) jk huddled around a radio. You know the picture. What are looking at? The floor. All fixated on the color commetary. Then the sound goes off like this. What would any sports fan do? Break the radio try to 'fix' it, and curse.
That could very well be the case for some fans who are blind. I would also say most yuppies who are blind have TV's. They can't see, but friends probably do.

"have no idea what it is like dealing with this."
Is not a 'totally typed dramatic' Take er easy thar Colorful one! I haven't walked a mile in yer shoes. And you piped a little release and the world will survive. And again, I don't know what is like. But I have a lil better, just a lil better after reading how 'Dramatic' the reactions about this One video. Whats that mean to me? Technology and attitude are converging and making your life a touch easier. And done with great humor!
I second that. ( 1 month ago by Hajiroku)
