Interestingly, yes. They based modern advertising on a "lesser form" of hypnoses mind control sudies that went on starting in the 1800s by people ranging from stage performers, to psychiatrists interested in use for theripy to government seeking new propaganda techniques.
Try saying to yourself that your ear itches 50 times and not scratch it. It's the base concept. It's commonly used theripy to break bad habbits, or create good ones.

many projects in science have been influenced by sci fiction. very often, the surrounding culture influences the way we see the world, and therefore the ideas and projects that scientist will have.
in this case it'S clearly a sci fi idea. I mean how stupid is it!!? they basically want to turn people into zombie/slaves which is typically a sci fi theme/idea. and it's pretty much impossible to do.

...so yep, scientist go after sci fi ideas, they work on sci fi ideas, because that's--unconsciously--how they see the world, and perceive what should be done; and itS also with these same lenses that other people will understand and like their project. Therefore scientists will get more interest from the public, and grants if they go for such themes and projects. studying this influence of cultures on science paradigms/projects is a really new field --

...sociology of science-- that I knew about cause I read Kuhn's "the structure of scientific revolutions" (book from the 60s), but today I saw a really good ytube video about it too: Lee Smolin: How science is like democracy, on TED talks.

True, however I think the "first" scientists were never inspired by sci-fi since the conception wasn't around. Its not like sci-fi totally dominates science or the other ways its a give and take relation sociologically.

haha can'T agree more: it's a give and take relationship. totally. I'm not saying that science is drived ONLY by science fiction, and public interest, but it's stil one of the main 'pressures' or 'constraint' that directs and influences science. But it's totally true that scientists don't always get influenced by sci fi--sometimes it's idea they got by themselves/somewhere else.
and it's of course true that science influences scifi :)of course.

There is something on the history channel about this very subject, it was talking about star wars and this scientist lady basically said that star wars was influenced by science and scientists were influenced by star wars.
Anyways in this bit, its also alot about the relationship between government and science. In alot of ways this is like how nazis used jewish prisoners for experiments. Maybe not as extreme but still... its kind of disturbing imo.

I can usually go 3 days just fine, but I'm unusually capable of going without sleep, after a week though, I'm on the edge of insanity.
I can't imagine going for months on end without sleep. That would be torture.
Other methods of "humane" torture come up with by the lovely CIA include loading people's food with hot peppers, or giving them only vitamin supplemented tofu to eat for the opposite end of the spectrum. (Tofu is good when mixed with other foods, but it is horrible plain.)
