This week on 101 East; Malaysia has just seen its biggest protest for almost a decade, with tens of thousands marching to demand electoral reform. Their call was met with tear-gas and water cannon. So is there a need for fundamental change in the south-east Asian country or did the demonstrators get what they deserve?
We talk to leading government figures Minister Dato' Seri Nazri Abd Aziz ,Khairy Jamaluddin (PM S I L) and one of the nation's top human rights activists Malik Imtiaz Sarwar.

Why didn't Imtiaz say anything about what happened in Terengganu?? Why didn't Imtiaz say about how harakah and other BA papers are operating freely? why didn't Imtiaz compare how mesia handled the situation with other countries like Singapore/Thailand/Myanmar and Indonesia? Why Imtiaz? why??

so basically what nazri is saying.. is that racism is accepted in malaysia as there is no need for institutional reform, that tear gasses abd water cannons can be used on gatherings of people.
Seems like I won't be having a birthday party for a while... might need to apply for a permit to gather my family and friends, and if we're too rowdy we might get dowsed by the water cannons.

Alternative papers operates freely and that's equal to total freedom of speech? Using tear gas and chemical sprays when people barely inched to pose a threat makes us better than those countries? oooh. pretty defensive. dude. all i'm saying, Imtiaz portrayed the situation where in Malaysia, the media is 100% controlled by the Govt. In the Al-Jazeera interview, I felt he was somehow or rather, misleading. PLUS. on the issue of the tear gas and all.. what the police was trying to do was to avoid another Terengganu incident. The demonstration was under heavy scrutiny by the world. But when it comes to maintaining peace... you got to do.. what you got to do.

To which nation are you referring to? To The United States? Yes. There are "NO" vote rigging in the United States. To The United Kingdom? Where the ruling party speaks on behalf of only the majority (sounds familiar.. oh yes! Malaysia does that too!) To Denmark? where The King has the final say in everything. You are talking about countries which have evolved from so many political terrain. We only turned 50 about 2 months ago. . Which nations are you talking about?

A nation doesn't have to be perfect for one to make comparisons with it. Despite imperfections, in the UK, the ruling party in the central gov't actually changes - an indicator of greater political independence. The QUEEN's role in Denmark today is largely ceremonial. The argument that we are still a young nation is a mere excuse. India is only 10 years older than Malaysia,but democracy there is far more vibrant,with parties as diverse as the Hindu right-wing BJP to the CPI-Marxist having power.

You've accurately replicated the same exercise in incoherence as what our good Mr.Khairy and Nazri did :) No.1 - Imtiaz didn't say 'the media' in general, he was referring to mainstream medias (an obvious thing for the informed citizen) and Al Jazeera is hardly 1 of them. If anything, the only 'misleading' element here is your comment for the part.
