Notice that do is aiming for the soft parts under the ribs so no bones broken with shinai, it would only hurt. Cutting through the head with a shinai - doesn't happen. And kote... no way. Some small bone in the hand (incorrectly executed kote), maybe. Tsuki could also be dangerous but we practice fighting with swords. See the shinai as a simulation. It's not meant to break bones. It's meant to NOT break bones -that's why they are made of grass. That's why we use shinai and not bokken nor katana
He broke the ... ( 1 month ago by neogtrmn)
He broke the metacarpal bone behind the index finger of his right hand, and this was the result of a misplaced kote strike (as I said before). I never said we aim to break bones, only that it can happen. To say they can't break bones however, is incorrect because they can, only not to the same extent as a bokuto could.

Well of course it is possible to break smaller bones. My point is that we practice with shinai in order not to break anything and the guy I responded to made it sound like Kendo is a tough sport where you break your opponents bones with the shinai and that shinai is the weapon we are trained to use. It has also occured that a guy got his eye stabbed in from a broken shinai and died. So sure, you can even die when practicing Kendo. But you can also die any time from almost anything.

Point taken, and I have heard of that incident. I've also heard of another rumored death that involved tsuki to the mune, which resulted in the person's chest getting compressed so hard his heart stopped. At any rate, it's just two accidents out of the countless thousands of practices that happen all the time.
Are you implying ... ( 1 month ago by FoolishSage42)
Are you implying that European fencing is not, in fact, based on historical armed combat techniques? The history of fencing is much the same as that of kendo, disregarding the obvious geographical and cultural differences. Both originated as methods of self-defense, and have been modified into sports, due to the influence of the times, a.k.a. the propogation of firearms.

Sorry for saying that before. See me huge baka XD My mom explained Fencing to me. So I understand it more now. Since I'm a huge Japanese person I never really looked into fencing... I'm only 12 after all =/

There are some good dojos in your area so I encourage you to check them out. Go to the AUSKF website for their dojo list in your city.

having just done one class in kendo, it makes a huge difference in my appreciation for this video. Though the bamboo sticks arent that heavy, swinging them with that much speed takes enormous strength and control, especially after 8 straight minutes.

incorrect, you are supposed to use your hara and keep your arms stretched till tsubasureage,, then it is possible your opponent falls onto the ground but it is WRONG to put your hands above your head, but the reason it is done by many people is that it is very hard to do it correct

The Japanese taught the kendo to Korean people in front of World War II.
They were pleased.
After the war, they found Kumd.
It was insisted the traditional culture that continued from ancient times.
In addition, surprisingly.they started the insistence that Korea had taught military arts in Japan.
However, Japan was not truly telling them the advanced technique.
Therefore, it is a bad copy of the quality though Kumd superficially looks
alike to the kendo.

for those who said kendo was founded first is wrong. koreans originally created kumdo, then the japanese took it in and made it more official. So in a sense both jap/kor rele created kendo/kumdo not either or
