All I have to say to those saying this was murder is this: Would you rather they have kept her alive and put her through all that pain and suffering? That would be like torture for her. They only do what's best for the horse. They kept Barbaro alive because he could at least stand, and they thought he deserved a second chance. I'm not saying that Eight Belles didn't, but it wasn't possible for her to stand. She probably would have developed a bad case of laminitis if they kept her in a sling.

In fact, my experience is that wherever money is a factor, it always wins at the expense of humans, animals, air, flora - all things I treasure. I'm sure you know a great deal more about horses than I do. But I know enough about horseracing to know that, at the very least, I would like to see radical reform. As our world becomes more sophisticated, we will scrutinize much that is considered 'normal.' What is now fringe thought will gradually become mainstream through awareness.

This a good subthread with interesting points made by all. Opponents of racing believe that the problem began with the breeding. Now there are horses hardwired to run, and it would take many natural generations to correct that. It is not an easy subject, but people a lot smarter than me have trouble resolving it. And yes, you can posit that most of the selective breeding done by humans to animals has had negative consequences. Still, the reforms mentioned throughout this topic would help.

Sure I own a Bible. I enjoy reading it, as I enjoy Bulfinch's Mythology. The Genesis story is mythology. A mountain of scientific facts refute Genesis. There are some good rules to live by in The New Testament, but Jesus as a Savior is, IMHO, legend.

I am a vet tech and let me tell you, she was not murdered. Horses are very sensitive creatures. Below their knees they have no muscle or anything to protect their bones except skin and their veins. Read some books. Get educated. It is the hardest call to make, but it was the best call to make. It ended her suffering. There is very little to do to horses in a huge injury. STop being a douche bag and grow up. She was not murdered. Thanks to all who understand that. May eight Belles rest in peace.
