this is what jazz is all about, and really what music seems to lack today as a whole is wrapped up in ben webster's voice -- the dignity and tenderness of his ballad here strikes a chord with me that no rap, speed metal or any other modern style music reaches. to each his own, but i prefer crystal-clear ice cold water to clorox.

Took my girlfriend to see Ben at Copenhagen's Montmartre club in spring 1973. Utterly romantic for us and Ben's face was lit up with the joy of playing the ballads... memorable, unforgettable.

Man, what a sound! Why doesn't music made today have the same emotional resonance and depth of soul that guys like Ben practically sweated? It almost makes me want to cry.

Thanks for sharing this with us! Ben had the most beautiful sound in the world. Ballad playing does not get any better than this, and the rhythm section compliments him perfectly. This is a wonderful music lesson to anyone who is at all interested in music of any kind.

Back in '42, I spent hours in Billy Berg's Club Capri in La. The "house" band was the Lee and Lester Young Band, which included another tenor, Bumps Myers. One night Webster came in and those three tenors cut each other for over an hour... all tempos, fast and slow. Probably the finest hour of jazz I ever experienced. Ben's sound was unique.
This video is the earliest I can recall seeing that great bassist, NHOP.

Of all the tenors, ... ( 1 day ago by jazzweather)
Of all the tenors, none had soul in it as much as Ben had. Ballads need soul more than anything else and Ben had it plenty. THE ballads player of all time. Period.
I listen to him all the time. Almost every night. Can't find better renditions of 'In a sentimental mood', 'Over the rainbow', 'Funny valentine', 'It never entered my mind'(with Hawk). My favorite tenor player. Beats Lester and Stan.
Thanks for the posting and sharing the story.
