Loudon Wainwright III and Philip Glass on NBC - 1989

Uploaded by: goaitsenvandervliet
Video Description:
"Jesse don't like it" played by my '71 favourite Loudon Wainwright III on David Sanborn's Night Music tv show october 15, 1989, followed by Philip Glass playing a piano piece called Metamorphosis Two. Glass is introduced by Wainwright.
Captured in my hotel room in the Holiday Inn Express Ramsey-Mahwah, New Jersey. Including a view of the room, myself in the mirror and pictures of my daughters. I'm sorry for the poor image quality, especially in the beginning, and not recording the complete piano piece. I ran out of Video8 tape.
"Jesse don't like it" appeared 10 years later on Wainwright's album Social Studies (1999), but I definitely prefer this version! David Mansfield plays the violin on both versions.
Hiram Bullock (1956-2008) plays the guitar. Don Alias (1939-2006) plays the tambourine.
Senator Jesse Helms did not like the song at all, I guess:
If Jesse don't like it then it's prob'ly not art
Jesse knows what's good Ol' Jesse is smart
And if you don't like that don't feel sad
'Cause the art that you like is probably bad
Grandma Moses, she's OK
Never exposes anything; everything's far away
And that statue of David's all right with Jesse
'Cause Michelangelo gave him such a tiny pee-pee
If Jesse don't like it, it don't stay;
get it out of the museum, get it out of there today
Jesse's fav'rite painting is the one of the clown
with the daisy in his hand and a tear rollin' down
In the kindergarten years ago, Jesse got rude
He took a red Crayola and he drew a nude
And the teacher took a ruler to Jesse's behind
She beat his butt but she ruin'd his mind
Jesse prob'ly didn't like Picasso
But neither did that dictator Franco
And I know about art but I've got to take a hike
If I like somethin' that Jesse don't like
If Jesse don't like it ...
If Jesse thinks it's dirty it don't get any funds
They use that taxpayer's money on tobacco and guns
Your freedom of expression is bein' denied;
But if you're not sure what you like then just let Jesse decide
Don't photograph a penis; don't paint a breast
Don't write about the truth because it might offend Jesse
And don't tell it like it is, and don't show where it's at
'Cause Jesse don't like it and that is that.
If Jesse don't like it ...

LW3 in 2003 on David Mansfield and this show: "I have some great buddies in L.A. David Mansfield has played on most of the records I've been making for the last 12 years. I met David at the (1988) Edmonton Folk Festival. And then we did a television show together, which was a great show, which is sadly no longer... David Sanborn was the host. That was the first time David Mansield... I called up David and asked him to come play with me on that. And then I've been using him on records ever since."
This 2nd version of the video has a better sound volume. The first one (uploaded 14 july 2007) had 786 viewers in one month, and a few reactions:
MColivejuice:
Where did you get this video? If you have all the footage of the Glass performance, you should post it as its own video, or add it to this one? Please?
goaitsenvandervliet:
Sorry, this is all there is. In 1989 I did not know there would be something like U2b to put my video on. By then I had not even heard about the Internet. Both LW3 and Philip Glass were favourites of mine. I thought it was funny to see them together on one screen, since their music is so different.
murcury:
You should really work on getting an interface.
goaitsenvandervliet:
And you should read the info that goes with the video.
murcury:
While I admire the intention to 'capture the moment', perhaps my expectation is that a TV show is not recorded right off the screen. Sorry. You obviously do have an interface, and a sense of nostalgia. It just looks and sounds awful.
goaitsenvandervliet:
You're right, I already mentioned the poor image quality. As soon as someone else puts a better version on U2b I won't hesitate to remove this one. It may be hard to get though. It is not on one of the Best of Night Music dvd's.
Nostalgia maybe, but I was surprised to find this 1989 footage I had forgotten about since my last trip to the USA.
I was sitting on my bed watching TV when his came along, so I grabbed my camera and made the recording.

I saw him do this live solo the Loudon song I'm talking about, about the same time. It was a wonderful moment in his show because it was so topical at that time. Wow, those were the good ol days, funding art was the big concern. jeezus, things are grim now. BTW, it's nice to see the whole motel room pan! really gives the video some personality.

July 4, 2008 Jesse Helms dies at 86.
Years ago Loudon wrote this brilliant song and here he is performing it on YouTube just as I hoped!
Who knew by the time Jesse Helms left office he'd be a mainstream conservative. And not because he moved toward
the mainstream but because the mainstream moved toward Jesse Helms.
Scary, very scary.

Thanks for posting this. I haven't seen it since I lost my video cassette of the programs (I used to tape them when I had a night job in college and watch them the next morning while eating Cap'n Crunch). Great song. I think it ranks right up there with his best topical songs.
