I'm using my hip and left hand to support the bike while i line up the rear stand with the spools. An alternative method is to put a block of wood under the side-stand to stand the bike upright making things easier. However, you've got to be careful if doing that as the bike is not as stable and you may topple the bike. Once the brackets are under the spools and your adding pressure to it the bike is fairly stable, allowing you to push down on the stand without needing to hold onto the bike.
Taking the bike off the stand requires you to add a downward force onto the stand as it trys to come up, releasing it nice and slow, and when the tyre hits the ground keep some pressure on the stand to support the bike while you move to the side supporting it with your hip and hand again.
