This recording, which avoids the cliched 12 bar and doo wop chord progressions that dominated the era, is surely one of the most original in the pop/rock canon. Holly's melodic rock'n'roll, and his approach, unusual for the time, of both writing and performing, anticipated the Beatles, whose music he would never hear. As an aside, it seems to me that the "da da rut da" portion of The Proclaimers' "500 Miles" is an allusion to this song.
