I loved this video! I've been a Freberg fan for several years and when i was younger i had no idea i was hearing his voice all over Warner Brothers cartoons with Mel Blanc. I also didn't know it was Freberg's voice on those ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANICA commercials with the blonde kid who i learned later was his son, Donavan. You can catch Freberg's voice hosting WHEN RADIO WAS, a retrospective hour program that plays old-time radio shows.

Can anyone explain the "Price is Right" joke in "SF presents: The US of A" during the Columbus scene?
Ferdinanad: Wait a minute! I ask as simple question and I get a question. Why should Spain sponsor you? Why don't you go to Portugal?
Columbus: I did, they bought the Price is Right
That joke's been tormenting 3 generations of my family for decades!
Please help!

to get that joke you need a little historical background: TV shows, especially those run in the daytime slot had a single sponsor, the daytime dramas ("mommas stories") were sponsored by soap companies, hence the name "soap operas". The great explorers also had sponsors, but they were members of the royal families of their country, or at least the land baron families that had all of the money and power.

stan's joke was to connect the sponsorship of explorers to the new world with the trite sponsorship of a game show such as "the price is right"

"Flaming Lips" was a real song, parodied by Freberg here. In "Spike Jones: Legend" the DVD set that came out recently, Spike's wife Helen Grayco sings the song as a Gypsy woman, straight. You must know that Spike is one of Stan's inspirations; he did an homage to Spike in his arrangement of "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise." Best wishes!

Frankly I only watched about 2 minutes of this clip, I was so stunned by the unfair description of Johnny Ray, I had to stop.
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Johnny and watching him perform in the 50s.
He was an emotional performer and calling him flamboyant is your view, but to say he was 'goofy' is way over the top.
I think his style was a product of his hearing loss, but I can tell you he was very serious about his craft and his huge successes is proof of his talent.
