Bob Brookmeyer did an interview in Jazz Improv magazine where he said that hes not into this thing of hearing music in your head that some composers say they do when they write music he just constructs things on paper and hears it later,he said that composers that say they hear things in there head are just hearing stuff they heard someplace else anyway.
Northsea Festival, ... ( 1 year ago by jassW)
Northsea Festival, I believe, - July 1980. I was there, travelling with these two masters, and two of my favorite human beings on the planet. A delight. Its satisfying to see this in circulation! Is there more?

you know any place online to get a read on that interview? that is a really interesting thing to me because I sort of always felt that way about music, how can someone hear every note they intend to play? and if that were true wouldn't that sort of spoil the fun of improving by stripping all of it's spontaneity? to me I think when you improv a line it is a great feeling when you even surprise yourself and new melodies come out of nowhere

Hall, Brookmeyer ... ( 1 year ago by manabozho)
Hall, Brookmeyer and Jimmy Giuffre toured briefly in the 60's, with Jimmy Giuffre Three albums out. No bass or percussion. Arrangements, but a lot of simultaneous improv that is replicated here. Brookmeyer is a harmony genius, so he can "comp" with the chordal instrument. Both are in good form--had no idea that this close an approx of the JG3 existed.

So true, Most of the time I play something I've been hearing in my head, it just sounds derivative an typical. The only stuff I've come up with that I end up liking is when I just say, to hell with it, and just play.

Jim Hall make this ... ( 1 year ago by Chordwayze)
Jim Hall make this accompaniment seem easy. It's one of the hardest things a guitarist can do. Then he tops it and takes some beautiful choruses.. That's why he is where he is at.
Great.
