I own both models TH-50PX600U and TH-42PX600U are full 1080p.
Warning: There is a difference in models. TH-50PX600U is 1080p and TH-50PX60U isnt. Notice the model number for a cheaper set (600u/60u). This HDTV is incredible. Just do a search online for these models. They show nothing but great reviews and comments.

Isn't 1024 x 768 a 3:4 ratio? This looks like a wide-screen, and Mr. Logan SAYS it's "wide-screen" too. Widescreen resolution would be 1280 x 768 or 1280 x 800, which is my laptop's native resolution, and it's a normal wide-screen display. I measured it with my Learjet Owner ID card.

the black levels look grey and the picture glare is awful. Honestly, if you want the best picture money can buy, then your best bet is a Pioneer Kuro plasma, but they're oh so expensive.

None at all. It's perfect . and the 720p resolution is outstanding! especially if you have an HD cable box and blu ray player. It's the best I've ever seen on any TV, no lie. Make sure your dad gets an HDMI cable and an HD Cable Box soon after the purchase so that he can experience TRUE HD!

I have the same tv and it has to be repaired/replaced under warrenty. Theres a large purple stripe that runs down the screen and that will fade in and out.
