Hi. Are you sure about that? I read that Prez changed after he got drafted during WWII--the Army came close to breaking his spirit. Bud Powell is famous for having been beaten badly on the head by policement (when trying to defend Monk), after which he was never quite the same.

JRDL1981, I have no trouble reading suzuhime008's comment. I am happy to translate it for you. Quote: "Coooool!!" Now you know. Next, I would like to ask you why you think all comments need to be in English or Spanish or some other language that you can read? Amazingly, even if you couldn't read it, there are millions of people in the world who can read it in Japanese, but maybe wouldn't understand it in English or Spanish or some language you know. Big surprise, huh?

It was in the Army that Prez was beaten. He had to go in 1944, and was never quite the same after his experiences in then brig. It's pretty clear that Pres was abused my MP's. He was a gentle, quiet and odd man who didn't fit into military life, especially in those racist days.

Getz's sound would still have been the same on a K Mart sax. Coltrane said the same thing; 'Man, it doesn't matter which sax I pick up, I still sound like me.'

A definite squeak. A reminder to us that Getz, one of the best tenorists ever, is human after all. Love the guy, though.

Can just ask how old you guy are, who are conversating with each other about jazz, either you guys spend all your life and time studying and listening to this stuff or you are very old people. If I'm going to be a good jazz saxophonist are you telling me I'm going to have to become a jazz history dictionary as well

2Godbdaglori, I'm 29 and make my living as a sax player. I'll never be a legend like Stan Getz but I do alright. So trust me when I say you DO NOT need to be a "jazz dictionary" in order to be a good sax player. You should, however, listen to A LOT of music... not just jazz either... all styles. I should tell you though, the people on this page are discussing relatively simple stuff. So if you're not understanding it, you do have some homework to do. But then, so do all of us! : )

From what I've heard about his embouchure and mouthpiece configuration it's amazing he didn't squeak all the damn time. I hear he used a mouthpiece with a very closed tip and applied almost no pressure at all with his lower jaw. If I'm wrong about this, someone please tell me. Anyway, the sax players in this forum know that's one helluva difficult way to play. I suppose Stan was just able to master it. Not suprising considering he was one of the greatest of all time.

I'm 33 and have been learning the sax for the past 3 years, but I am also holding down a 9 to 5 so its made progress a bit slow. When I first picked up the sax I felt like taking a couple years out to focus on it was a good idea but friend of my told me not to do that, its best to practice in my spear time and as time goes by I will see improvements. But reading all your comments is very educationaly and makes me realise I have a long way to go. Thanks

Since last year I've started listening to like old jazz like webster and so on. Wow dude you must work hard, cost of living is so high, how can you do it just playing. That sounds crazy. I can only imagine you have to be constantly selling yourself. I wouldn't mind getting to the stage where I could earn maybe a second income. I kknow sometimes when you known people will call you up from time to time to come and play here and there.

It can definitely be hard work, and some gigs totally suck, but the good gigs make it all worthwhile. Ben Webster is an excellent one to be listening to. From there you can maybe move to Lester Young, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, etc... Sounds like you're on a good path. Keep at it. Music could be your career someday, or at the very least, an incredibly fulfilling night job. Either way, the journey is worth it, man!
