The first major battle of the Vietnam War and a test of the concept of airborne assault using the new Huey UH-1 helicopter. Led by Lt-Gen Hal Moore the 7th Air Cavalry set down in LZ X-Ray with the intent to engage the enemy, they were immediately surrounded by 3 enemy battalions. They fought against these almost overwhelming odds for 3 days before claiming victory.

God bless you and thank you for your service there.Very tough battle.You guys fought like true warriors.Did you get to meet Lt Col Hal Moore at la drang? He wrote the book "We were soldiers" based on this battle.He retired as a 3 star general.

ur talking about the sister battalion getting all but wiped out at LZ albany. they walked from LZ X-ray to anotehr LZ and got ambushed along the way. 2/5 and 2/7 cav 151 killed, 121 wounded and 4 missing in action

troops. From that point on their tactics were
mortar attacks, shoot and scoot, roadside bombs, and of course massacres of civilians.

Custer was not a pussy. He won bigger battles in the Civil War than Moore did in Asia. If Custer had 105's and Hueys in Montana and his Majors, Capt's, Leut's would have been half as good as Moore's and supported him ,who knows. The Cav found, fixed, and fought the enemy where they were in both battles. Moore had a vol outfit( my cousin was one of them) Custer had Civil Re-treds. Moore may have been a better enlisted man motavater.( can't spell that word, lol)
