Try and get a shinai with a longer tsuka. Also, from my understanding of Jodan, you are keeping your hands too high(not close enough to your head, and your arms should be bent a little bit to get that tension, which makes your ready to strike sharply. I have no other way to explain. There are some articles by chiba sensei on the internet, as well as some of his videos. Im also a jodan newb! Good luck.

A lot more calmness dude, make only small steps and very small to none shinai movement. By this you are able to pressure your opponent with seme by even very small Shinai movements you do, if you move your Shinai and Hands all the time, this won´t have an effect on your opponent, rather you are falling in a rythm which be used against you. Gain the ability of just standing there and waiting for your opporunity. Alltough Jodan is the kamae of fire, no one says that fire has to move all the time

And I quote, "When it comes to tsuka length, the norm for a chudan shinai is about 3.5 fist lengths, but for jodan something slightly longer, about 4 fist lengths, is better, says Chiba sensei. If you try holding a shinai with an excessively short tsuka and then take jodan, you'll clearly see that you end up with a cramped stance. Accordingly, if you do the opposite and use a long tsuka, you get a comfortable stance with some depth...."

Quotaion continued, "...It's easy to pressure an opponent as you can suppress them from above when you seme. Chiba sensei also feels that it is effective when close in and, for example, when striking kote with both hands." That chiba sensei and many other Jodan sensei say it, pretty much means its true. I can tell you from personal experience, the more you play jodan, the more you will feel the need of a longer tsuka. You will start to feel "cramped" just as chiba senei mentions.

From what I've been told, the end of the tsuka is where Jodan players apply their seme. Also, from what I can see, your aite is getting in too close, your attack range is a bit further out and you're getting cramped...even if you miss just taiatari him so he can't get a clean point. I want to try Jodan, but my sensei keeps reminding me that I should work on my Kendo from Kamae first before thinking about Jodan. heh, keep it up man.
I do Jodan since ...( 2 months ago by fmk2)
I do Jodan since 2007 and i can see some things that you could work on. -Spare energy: Jodan is a heavy kamae, if you strike without definition you will get tired pretty quick -Seme: U r getting too close -Tekubi: Gotta work a lot on it! Do all the training juz with your left hand, kirikaeshi, shoyaku suburi, everything! -Kamae: Jodan is the fire kamae, u need 2 be at the comand in all time! U must control the fight I gtg, ill post something else later cya! keep working

Okay... I gotta tell you some things... Oh, before that I'm not a good jyodan, or a chudan player either, just to let you know. One: Movement. You're moving TOO MUCH. I mean, you're going back TOO MUCH, and also when you step forward you go down and up... Well you wont do that if you get accustomed with jyodan. Two: Kote men... well I say that was some crazy movement, but it won't have any affect.. on scoring (Well if youre doing nito it'll be a different story, but well...)

The most important... Distance. Well some other people already said it... But yeah, your distance is way too close... of course when you try to hit...
