Hello, I'm Rebecca Field with today's UPI entertainment update on this Thursday, February 21, 2008.
The Arctic Monkeys are celebrating big wins from last night's Brit Awards. The band won the top trophies for best British album and best British group at the music awards in London. The Foo Fighters also won big taking best international group, and best international album. And the band Take That took two awards for best live act and best single. For favorite international solo artist...Kanye West and Kylie Minogue took the trophies. And favorite British solo artist went to Marc Ronson and Kate Nash. Paul McCartney was given a special honor for his contribution to music.
Meanwhile, Jessica Simpson's new film is a huge success...in Ukraine. Her film "Blonde Ambition" grabbed the top spot at Ukranian box offices last weekend...taking in more than 250,000 dollars. It's a big comeback after the film's flop in the U.S....it was only released in a few Texas theaters in December...bringing in only a little more than 1700 dollars. Next up...the film is headed to Bulgaria.
Actress Tina Fey and country star Carrie Underwood will help welcome back "Saturday Night Live" following the writer's strike. Fey, who's a fellow SNL cast member, will be the guest host and Underwood will be the musical guest. The comedy sketch show has been on a break since the strike began November 5, but now writers are back to work and the first new episode will air in about 3 months.
And to add on to her list of talents...Beyonce is now taking on the role of executive producer. The singer will apparently produce and star in a new film about the famous Chicago based music label Chess records. She'll play iconic jazz singer Etta James in the film called "Cadillac Records"...and she'll also reportedly record 4 songs for the movie. There's no word on when it will hit theaters yet.
A star-studded cast hit the red carpet in L.A. for the premiere of the new comedy "Penelope." Cast members Christina Ricci and Reese Witherspoon were at the event...as well as their co-star James McAvoy who arrived with his wife Anne-Marie. The film is apparently a romantic modern day fairytale about a woman who's cursed until she finds true love. It's set for a U.S. release February 29.
That's all for now. For more on those stories and more of the days new go to upi.com. Thanks for watching.
