Nobody could swing or use space like Basie.I long for the days when jazz was fun. Basie realized the value of a top-notch rhythm section. Nice to see Freddie Green there. Never took a solo in his life, but boy, could he comp.

I only saw Basie on an airline flight. The bass
had its own seat. I nodded at him but respected
his privacy. I never saw them play. Watching
this I can see he's like some other pianists who
vocalize to themselves while playing. Sometimes
a piano mike picks that up (SOME Keith Jarrett).

In response to chemiecta: That's a bit of an oversimplification. Is jazz a music form shaped largely by African Americans? Yes. Were all the instruments you see in this video -- and much of the music structure on which jazz is based -- invented by Europeans? Yes. Have there been many white musicians who contributed to the development of jazz? Yes. It's music. American music. The product of many cultures. Why not leave it at that?
