Who cares who had what range. You can't compare apples and oranges and say one is better then the other. I feel sorry for Jeff if he had to live under his dad's shadow growing up as a musician with people comparing them. Who cares! Great music, both of them. 'nuff said.

The first time I heard this song was on a 60 watt university radio station at 2 a.m. I knew as soon as I heard it that the singer had to be dead. The tragedy is already there in his voice, it radiated out of him. Also, had he still been alive, I knew there was no way his amazing talent would have remained fairly obscure by modern celebrity standards. I still have Greetings from L.A. on vinyl, but play it only rarely because I never wanted to get too used to it.

Bought Greetings From LA by mistake when looking for Jeff Buckley material, played it once & put it aside, prefering Jeff's beautiful music. Years later, dusted off GFLA, began to get past the more challenging material & hear the immense colour and subtlety in Tim's voice. I love Jeff's work, but believe Tim to be the greater singer & this track is a really fine example of his astonishing range and vocal capability.

what "challenging material" is on Greetings from L.A.???..."sweet surrender" is the most "experimental" track on that whole album, and its pretty basic in its musical structure...

'Fraid I'm not expert enough to give technical reasons, but I guess for me, it lay more in the vocal tone, and the improvisional nature of Tim's material compared with, say, the traditional Corpus Christi Carol on Jeff's "Grace" which initially was much more accessible for me.
